Steppesaurus
''Steppesaurus'' is an extinct genus of basal Eupelycosauria belonging to the Sphenacodontidae, related to ''Dimetrodon'' and ''Sphenacodon'', from the Late Permian San Angelo Formation of Texas. Discovery and naming A maxilla and dentary, holotype FMNH UR 148, were at the Pease River found by Everett Claire Olson in 1950, who named the genus in 1953, together with James R. Beerbower, after J. Steppe who had assisted in the excavation. Description The body length of ''Steppesaurus'' has been estimated as high as eighteen feet, making it the largest known sphenacodontid, but this failed to take into account that its teeth, as restored, were more widely spaced. It likely had less teeth in its maxilla, which as a whole was not particularly large. Sphenacodontidae
Sphenacodontidae (Greek: "wedge point tooth family") is an extinct family of small to large, advanced, carnivorous, Late Pennsylvanian to middle Permian pelycosaurs. The most recent one, ''Dimetrodon angelensis'', is from the late Kungurian or early Roadian San Angelo Formation. However, given the notorious incompleteness of the fossil record, a recent study concluded that the Sphenacodontidae may have become extinct as recently as the early Capitanian. Primitive forms were generally small (60 cm to 1 meter), but during the later part of the early Permian these animals grew progressively larger (up to 3 meters or more), to become the top predators of their environments. Sphenacodontid fossils are so far known only from North America and Europe. Characteristics The skull is long, deep and narrow, an adaptation for strong jaw muscles. San Angelo Formation
The San Angelo Formation is a geologic formation in Texas. It preserves fossils dating back to the Permian period. It is one of the geologically youngest formations to preserve fossils of pelycosaurs. Stratigraphy and age The San Angelo Formation belongs to the Kungurian stage of the Cisuralian series. It underlies the Blaine Formation, which is either upper Kungurian or lower Guadalupian. Fossil content Everett C. Olson regarded the San Angelo Formation as preserving some of the oldest known therapsids, several of which he classified in a taxon he called Eotheriodonta. These taxa are now interpreted as caseids and sphenacodontids, not therapsids. Phthinosuchidae
''Phthinosuchus'' is an extinct genus of therapsids from the Middle Permian of Russia. ''Phthinosuchus'' is the sole member of the family Phthinosuchidae. ''Phthinosuchus'' may have been one of the most primitive therapsids, meaning that its ancestors may have branched off early from the main therapsid line. Discovery ''Phthinosuchus'' was named in 1954 by Ivan Yefremov. It is currently only known from the back of the skull, as the front of the skull was lost after description. Two species, ''P. discors'' and ''P. horissiaki'', have been described. Description ''Phthinosuchus'' was 1.5 m (5 ft) long with a 20 cm skull, and looked much like the Sphenacodontids, such as ''Dimetrodon'' and ''Sphenacodon''. Lopingian
The Lopingian is the uppermost series/last epoch of the Permian. It is the last epoch of the Paleozoic. The Lopingian was preceded by the Guadalupian and followed by the Early Triassic. The Lopingian is often synonymous with the informal terms late Permian or upper Permian. The name was introduced by Amadeus William Grabau in 1931 and derives from Leping, Jiangxi in China. It consists of two stages/ ages. The earlier is the Wuchiapingian and the later is the Changhsingian. The International Chronostratigraphic Chart (v2018/07) provides a numerical age of 259.1 ±0.5 Ma. If a Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) has been approved, the lower boundary of the earliest stage determines numerical age of an epoch. Pease River
The Pease River is a river in Texas, United States. It is a tributary of the Red River that runs in an easterly direction through West Texas . It was discovered and mapped for the first time in 1856 by Jacob de Córdova, who found the river while surveying for the Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad Company; it was named after Texas Governor Elisha M. Pease. In December 1860, the Texas Rangers recaptured Cynthia Ann Parker and her daughter from the Comanche Indians at an engagement along the river. The river begins northeast of Paducah in northern Cottle County and runs eastward for to its mouth on the Red River northeast of Vernon.
