Stephens, Queensland
Stephens is a former suburb of the City of Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. History Stephens was named after the Stephens Swamp, an area of wetlands between Reedy Creek and Burleigh Heads. The swamp, in turn, was named after Thomas Blacket Stephens who purchased 6980 acres of hinterland in 1873 to drain it into Little Tallebudgera Creek to create land for dairy farming. In the 1980s, Stephens began to develop a suburban character. Bond University was established in Stephens in 1987 when the Parliament of Queensland granted it university status via the passage of the Bond University Act. City Of Gold Coast
The City of Gold Coast is the local government area spanning the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia and surrounding areas. With a population of 606,774 it is the second most populous local government area in Australia (City of Brisbane being the largest). Its council maintains a staff of over 2,500. Reedy Creek, Queensland
Reedy Creek is a suburb in the City of Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. In the , Reedy Creek had a population of 6,659 people. Geography Located in the hinterland towards the southern end of the city, Reedy Creek is a developing residential area. The suburb is bounded to the north-east by the Pacific Motorway (M1), to the east by Old Coach Road, then follows the ridgeline around to the north-west and then loosely follows Eden View Drive back to the M1. The elevation rises from above sea level in the north of the suburb to over in the south of the suburb at the end of Abbey Ridge Road. Reedy Creek rises in the south of the suburb and flows through it, exiting it to the north-east under the M1 into Varsity Lakes. Geography Burleigh Head is a cape () jutting into the Coral Sea at the northern mouth of Tallebudgera Creek. Rising to a height of , Burleigh Head is a prominent local landmark. Thomas Blacket Stephens (5 January 1819 – 26 August 1877) was a wealthy Brisbane businessman and newspaper proprietor who also served as an alderman and mayor of Brisbane Municipal Council,Brisbane City Council Archives a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland and a Member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Personal life Thomas Blacket Stephens was born on 5 January 1819 at Rochdale, Lancashire, England, the son of Rev. William Stephens (a Baptist minister) and his wife Elizabeth (née Blacket). On 6 September 1848 Thomas emigrated from Liverpool on the ship 'Bengal' arriving in Sydney, New South Wales on 12 February 1849. His cousin Edmund Blacket was the Colonial Architect in Sydney. Thomas married Anne Connah in Balmain, Sydney at the home of his cousin, Edmund Blacket, in 1856.
