Early life and education Stephen Anthony Smith was born in the Bronx, a borough of New York City. He was raised in the Hollis section of Queens. Smith is the fifth of six children. Colonel Stephen Boyd Miles (January 9, 1822 – October 30, 1898) was a frontiersman, stagecoach magnate, cattle rancher, banker and philanthropist in Nebraska and the greater American Midwest.
