Stephen McDermott
Stephen McDermott is an Irish former Gaelic footballer who played for Glenfin and the Donegal county team. His inter-county debut came in 2003. He played in the 2003 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship quarter-final draw with Galway but was substituted at half-time because of a problem with his toe. He returned to play in the semi-final against Armagh. He often played alongside John Gildea in midfield but could also play as a forward. He nearly scored a goal against Armagh in the 2006 Ulster Senior Football Championship final that would have levelled the game; Donegal lost, he never won an Ulster Senior Football Championship. The BBC report omits his name but lists him as a substitute. Gaelic Football
Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. 2003 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship
The 2003 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship was the 117th staging of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter county, inter-county Gaelic football tournament. The championship began on 4 May 2003 and ended on 28 September 2003. Armagh GAA, Armagh entered the championship as the 2002 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, defending champions. On 28 September 2003, Tyrone GAA, Tyrone won the championship following a 0-12 to 0-9 defeat of Armagh in the All-Ireland final. This was their first All-Ireland title. John Gildea
John Gildea (born 27 March 1971) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer who played for Naomh Conaill and the Donegal county team. He is originally from Glenties. Playing career Gildea made his championship debut for Donegal as a substitute against Down in 1995. Pat Ward and Michael Gallagher were county footballers when Gildea was "coming through". His early career was troubled; suffering a problem (which turned out to be a Vitamin B12 deficiency) that affected his ability to train, he made no further championship appearances while P. J. McGowan was manager of the county. Gildea then played illegally under an assumed name for Donegal New York in 1997, the illegality due to him officially registering to play in Boston. Ulster Senior Football Championship
The Ulster Senior Football Championship is an inter-county competition for Gaelic football teams in the province of Ulster. It is organised by the Ulster Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) and begins in early May. The final is usually played on the third Sunday in July. All nine Ulster counties participate. It is regarded as hardest to win of the four provincial football championships. At a referee conference in January 2015, David Coldrick said about officiating in the competition: "Ulster makes or breaks you. It can be a graveyard. The games are different.
