Stephen Betts
Steve Betts, also known as Stephen F.X. Betts and L. Howard Hughes, is a British songwriter and session musician. He formed new wave band The Books, which released three singles and an album, ''Expertise'' on Logo Records in 1980·. Subsequently, he was the keyboardist for the band the Associates. New Wave Music
New wave is a loosely defined music genre that encompasses pop-oriented styles from the late 1970s and the 1980s. It was originally used as a catch-all for the various styles of music that emerged after punk rock, including punk itself. Later, critical consensus favored "new wave" as an umbrella term involving many popular music styles of the era, including power pop, synth-pop, ska revival, and more specific forms of punk rock that were less abrasive. It may also be viewed as a more accessible counterpart of post-punk. The Associates (band)
The Associates (or simply Associates) were a Scottish post-punk and pop band, formed in Dundee in 1979 by singer Billy Mackenzie and guitarist Alan Rankine. The group first gained recognition after releasing an unauthorized cover of David Bowie's " Boys Keep Swinging" as their debut single in 1979, which landed them a contract with Fiction Records. They followed with their debut album ''The Affectionate Punch'' in 1980 and the singles collection '' Fourth Drawer Down'' in 1981, both to critical praise. They achieved commercial success in 1982 with the UK Top 10 album '' Sulk'' and UK Top 20 singles " Party Fears Two" and "Club Country", during which time they were associated with the New Pop movement. Rankine left the group that year, leaving MacKenzie to record under the Associates name until 1990. They briefly reunited in 1993. MacKenzie died by suicide in 1997. Peter Murphy (musician)
Peter John Joseph Murphy (born 11 July 1957) is an English singer, songwriter, and musician. He is the vocalist for the post-punk goth rock band Bauhaus. After Bauhaus initially disbanded, Murphy formed Dali's Car with Japan's bassist Mick Karn and released one album, '' The Waking Hour'' (1984). He later went on to release a number of solo albums, including '' Should the World Fail to Fall Apart'' (1986) and ''Love Hysteria'' (1988). In 1990, he achieved mainstream success with his hit single "Cuts You Up", which topped the American Modern Rock Tracks for 7 weeks. His album ''Deep'' also reached No. 44 on the ''Billboard'' 200. In 1992, Murphy released '' Holy Smoke'', which reached No. 108 on the Billboard 200 chart along with lead single "The Sweetest Drop", which peaked at No. 2 on the American Modern Rock Tracks chart. ''Should the World Fail to Fall Apart'' is the debut album by the British solo artist Peter Murphy, formerly of the gothic rock band Bauhaus. The album contains Murphy's covers of Magazine's "The Light Pours Out of Me" and Pere Ubu's "Final Solution." It was released in 1986. Production Many guest musicians appear on the album, including Howard Hughes and John McGeoch. Critical reception ''Trouser Press'' wrote: "If Murphy could remove the melodrama from his delivery, a lot of the songs might have been quite nice. But even at low volume and languorous tempo, he can’t shake the old goth theatrics out of his voice." 60x60 is a collection of 60 electroacoustic or acousmatic works from 60 different composers/artists, each work 60 seconds or less in duration. 60x60 project showcases sixty new works, each sixty seconds or less, by sixty composers in a continuous sixty-minute concert, for a one-hour cross-section of contemporary music. The 60x60 project was conceived and developed by the new music consortium, Vox Novus and its founder, Robert Voisey. 60x60 was designed to showcase the diversity of the contemporary music and has succeeded in presenting thousands of composers in hundreds of performances around the world since 2003.
