Stepan ( uk, Степань; pl, Stepań; he, סטפאן) is an urban-type settlement in Sarny Raion ( district) of Rivne Oblast ( province) in western Ukraine. Its population was 4,073 as of the 2001 Ukrainian Census. Current population: The settlement is located in the historic Volhynia region of Ukraine, on the left bank of the Horyn, a tributary of the Prypiat. History The first written mention of Stepan dates back to 1290. In 1900, the Jewish population of Stepan totaled 1,854. During the World War II occupation of Ukraine, the Nazi German occupying forces established a Jewish ghetto, where nearly 3000 Jews were killed. Russia participated in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. In summary, the country's participants earned 15 medals: three gold, five silver, and seven bronze. The gold-medal tally of three was the worst ever result for Russia since the breakup of the Soviet Union, whilst the total of 15 medals was the country's second lowest score since the 2002 Winter Games. This was seen as a national humiliation considering that Russia was to host the next Winter Games at Sochi. Alpine Skiing At The 2010 Winter Olympics – Men's Combined
The men's super combined competition of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics was held at Whistler Creekside in Whistler, British Columbia. The competition was scheduled for February 16, but was postponed due to weather delays in preceding races; it was held five days later on February 21. American athlete Bode Miller won his only Olympic gold medal, Ivica Kostelić of Croatia won silver, and Silvan Zurbriggen of Switzerland took the bronze. One major change in this event for the 2010 Olympics was the switch from a traditional dedicated "combined" (K), taking place over one or two days and involving a downhill run and two slalom runs (as the combined had been since its reintroduction to the Olympics in 1988), to a one-day "super combined" (SC), consisting of a downhill run in the morning and one slalom run in the afternoon.
