Stella Splendens
Stella Splendens ("Splendid Star") is a polyphonic song (fol. 21v–22), with two parts voices from the ''Llibre Vermell de Montserrat'', one of the oldest extant medieval manuscripts containing music. Polyphony
Polyphony ( ) is a type of musical texture consisting of two or more simultaneous lines of independent melody, as opposed to a musical texture with just one voice, monophony, or a texture with one dominant melodic voice accompanied by chords, homophony. Within the context of the Western musical tradition, the term ''polyphony'' is usually used to refer to music of the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. Baroque forms such as fugue, which might be called polyphonic, are usually described instead as contrapuntal. Also, as opposed to the ''species'' terminology of counterpoint, polyphony was generally either "pitch-against-pitch" / "point-against-point" or "sustained-pitch" in one part with melismas of varying lengths in another. In all cases the conception was probably what Margaret Bent (1999) calls "dyadic counterpoint", with each part being written generally against one other part, with all parts modified if needed in the end. Adaro (band)
Adaro was a German medieval folk rock band active from 1997 to 2006. Style While their first CD, ''Stella Splendens'', was based mainly on Spanish songs from the 13th and 14th century, the later works incorporated late medieval songs from the '' Minnesang'' tradition by artists such as Hans Sachs, Walther von der Vogelweide and Oswald von Wolkenstein. The album ''Minnenspiel'' (2002) has been lauded for being a fresh, original work in the Mittelalter rock genre featuring very melodic and modern sound structures. The German ''Sonic Seducer'' magazine noted the contrast between the clear Heavenly Voices style of singer Konstanze Kulinsky and Christoph Pelgen's smooth male vocals, as well as the perfect mastering of the instruments on this record. The 2004 album ''Words never spoken - Extended Edition'' which includes the tracks of the '' Words never spoken'' EP (1999) was noted to have a rather light style reminiscent of Pop rock. Heimatærde
Heimatærde is a German electro-industrial band with a medieval motif. It was created as a studio project by Disc jockey Ashlar von Megalon (DJ Ash) in 2004. History Heimatærde was founded in 2004, as a studio project by German DJ Ashlar von Megalon. After the first EP ''Ich hab die Nacht getræumet'' (tr. I Have Dreamed the Night), released in the same year by Infacted Recordings, the first album 'Gotteskrieger' was released in 2005. Outside Germany it is released from Metropolis Records. In the beginning, DJ Ash avoided acting on stage, because music should be in the fore. The first performance of Heimatærde was 2007 at Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig. In January 2018, the new drummer, Brother Henry of Kent, was introduced. He has supported the band live before. Qntal
Qntal is a German "electro-medieval" band founded in 1991 by Michael Popp and Ernst Horn. They later added vocalist Syrah (Sigrid Hausen) to complete the band. It has roots in Estampie, an acoustic band based on "authentic" Early music, whereas Qntal is a dark electronic "crossover" project. Michael Popp and Syrah are the principal members. Horn left the group in 1999, to concentrate on his other band, Deine Lakaien. He later formed Helium Vola in 2001. Philipp Groth (a.k.a. Fil) then joined Qntal. In 2008, singer and violist Sarah M. Newman (Mariko) left the New York-based band Unto Ashes to work with Qntal and Estampie in Germany. The band's lyrics are primarily drawn from historical sources. Throughout their first three albums, lyrics were primarily in Latin, medieval German, Galician-Portuguese and a few other European tongues. Cornix Maledictum
In Greek and Roman mythology, Cornix is a character in Ovid's ''Metamorphoses''. She was a princess and the daughter of Coronaeus. Mythology One day as Cornix was walking by the seashore, Neptune (Poseidon) saw her and attempted to seduce her. When his efforts failed he attempted rape, and Cornix fled, crying out to men and gods, and while no man heard her, "the virgin goddess feels pity for a virgin": Pallas Athena transformed her into a crow. She also cites her resentment that her place as Minerva's servant is being taken over by Nyctimene transformed into the owl, where the transformation was punitive. Hughes De Courson
Hughes de Courson is a French musician and arranger. The Malicorne years Hughes de Courson is best known for being on all of the albums by Malicorne. He played electric guitar, bass, crumhorn, percussion, recorder, positive organ, piano, elka, synthesiser, glockenspiel and Hammond organ. He was producer on some of the albums. His most original track was probably "Vive La Lune" on '' Balançoire En Feu'' (1981), which is largely instrumental. It typifies the colourful, bizarre sounds that he later made as a soloist. Cantus Paganus
A cantus (Latin for "singing", derived from ''cantare''), is an activity organised by Belgian, Dutch, French, and Baltic fraternities. A cantus mainly involves singing traditional songs and drinking beer. It is governed by strict traditional rules. The use of this dates back a few centuries and was inspired by German student organisations; however some of the songs that are sung date back to the Middle Ages. Cantus probably shares same roots with commercium, sitsit and tableround. Currently, the world record for biggest traditional cantus is in the hands of the Eurekaweek, based in Rotterdam, who welcomed 4594 officially registered guests during their 2019 cantus. Thomas Binkley
Thomas Binkley (Cleveland, Ohio, December 26, 1931 – Bloomington, Indiana, April 28, 1995) was an American lutenist and early music scholar. Thomas Eden Binkley studied at the University of Illinois (BM. 1956, PhD. 1959) and the University of Munich (1957–58). He taught at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel (1973–77). He was then founding director of the Indiana University Early Music Institute at Bloomington, Indiana from 1979 till his death from cancer at the age of 63. For twenty years (1960–1980) he led the Studio der Frühen Musik in Munich with Andrea von Ramm (1928–99) and Sterling Jones, producing an extensive discography of medieval music. Binkley was effectively house artist for EMI Electrola in the first years of the EMI Reflexe series in Germany.
