Steigen ('stejgen) is a municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is part of the traditional district of Salten. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Leinesfjord. Other villages include Bogen, Leines, Nordfold, Nordskot, and Sørskot. Engeløy Airport, Grådussan is located in the northern part of the municipality. Måløy–Skarholmen Lighthouse is located in the Vestfjorden in the western part of the municipality. The only road access to the municipality is via the Steigen Tunnel. The municipality is the 114th largest by area out of the 356 municipalities in Norway. Steigen is the 246th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 2,591. Steigen Tunnel
The Steigen Tunnel ( no, Steigentunnelen) is a road tunnel in Nordland county, Norway. The long tunnel is located on the Norwegian County Road 835 highway in the municipalities of Hamarøy and Steigen. The tunnel begins at the village of Tømmerneset in Hamarøy and heads northwest through the Veggfjellan mountain to the northwest, exiting the mountain at the Forsan farm. The tunnel is wide and has an interior height of about . The tunnel was completed in 1990 and from 1990 until 2005, it was the longest road tunnel in Nordland county. Kjerringøy
Kjerringøy is a village in Bodø Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The village is located about north of the town of Bodø, along the Karlsøyfjorden, just south of the entrance to the Folda fjord. The Kjerringøy Church is located in the village. Mørsvikbotn
or is a small village located in the north part of Sørfold Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The village sits at the end of the Mørsvikfjorden arm of the Nordfolda fjord. The European route E6 highway passes through the village. The lakes Mørsvikvatnet and Sildhopvatnet are located northeast of the village. Mørsvikbotn has a school, a grocery shop called NærButiken managed by Eva Borgan also has a wee coffee shop where you can read a good book that they keep at this coffee shop inside the store. A nice place to wind down for a cuppa coffee/tea, Mørsvikbotn Chapel, an aquaculture co-op, and a few camping sites. The village is centered around the farm ''Mørsvik'' at the end of the fjord, known as ''Mørsvikbotn'', so the larger village area is also known as ''Mørsvikbotn''. Nordfold (municipality)
Nordfold is a former municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1906 until its dissolution in 1964. The municipality surrounded the Nordfolda branch off of the Folda fjord in what is now Steigen Municipality, plus a small portion of the present-day Sørfold Municipality. The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Nordfold, where the Nordfold Church is located. History The municipality of Nordfold was established on 1 January 1906 when the old Nordfold-Kjerringøy Municipality was split into two new municipalities: Nordfold (population: 1,485) and Kjerringøy (population: 857). The Schei Committee ( no, Schei-komitéen) was a committee named by the Government of Norway to look into the organization of municipalities in Norway post-World War II. It convened in 1946, and its formal name was (The 1946 Committee on Municipal Division). Its more commonly used name derives from the committee leader, Nikolai Schei Nikolai Andreas Schei (9 May 1901 – 25 May 1985) was a Norwegian jurist and civil servant. Formannskapsdistrikt
() is the name for Norwegian local self-government districts that were legally enacted on 1 January 1838. This system of municipalities was created in a bill approved by the Parliament of Norway and signed into law by King Carl Johan on 14 January 1837.
