Donna Steichen
Donna Steichen is a Roman Catholic author and journalist. Born in Wadena, Minnesota to Margaret (Corcoran) and Maurice Merrigan, she lived most of her life in St. Cloud, Minnesota, and later in Ojai, California. In 1950, she married LeRoy Steichen, and they became the parents of four children. Before becoming known for her writing, Steichen was a classroom teacher and religious educator, and was engaged in the pro-life movement from its inception. From 1980 to 1986, she served as vice-president and president, successively, of the Minnesota chapter of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights. Donna Steichen is best known to the general public for her best selling 1991 book ''Ungodly Rage: The Hidden Face of Catholic Feminism'', a critical analysis of the impact of feminism on American Catholicism. Edward Jean Steichen (March 27, 1879 – March 25, 1973) was a Luxembourgish American photographer, painter, and curator, renowned as one of the most prolific and influential figures in the history of photography. Steichen was credited with transforming photography into an art form. His photographs appeared in Alfred Stieglitz's groundbreaking magazine ''Camera Work'' more often than anyone else during its publication run from 1903 to 1917. Dr. Mary Steichen Calderone (born Mary Rose Steichen; July 1, 1904 – October 24, 1998) was an American physician, author, public speaker, and public health advocate for reproductive rights and sex education. Known as the "mother of sex education" as well as the "grande dame of sex education", Dr. Calderone was an instrumental figure in the advancement of reproductive rights and sex education in the United States. Marie Steichen (died September 2006) was a Democratic politician from Woonsocket, South Dakota, who gained fame for winning a local election two months after dying of cancer. In the general election of November 7, 2006 she defeated, by a vote of 100 to 64, the incumbent Republican candidate Merlin Feistner for the post of commissioner of Jerauld County in the U.S. state of South Dakota. This was the first time she had stood for election for political office. She and her husband Harold lived on a farm south of Lane, South Dakota. René Steichen (born 27 November 1942) is a Luxembourgian politician and jurist. A member of the Christian Social People's Party (CSV), Steichen first held office as Mayor of Diekirch (1974–1984). He entered the Chamber of Deputies in 1979. In 1984, he entered the government as a Secretary of State, in which capacity he served until 1989, when he was promoted to Minister for Agriculture, Viticulture, and Rural Development.
