Stefanie Kubissa
Stefanie Kubissa (born 6 January 1985) is a German sabre fencer, team bronze medallist at the 2001 World Championships and team gold medallist at the 2001 European Championships. Career Kubissa first competed in nine-pin bowling, in which she was Middle Rhein champion and German national champion for her age group, category B. When she was 13 years old she switched to sabre at TSV Kanten under coach Emmo Kawald. Within her first year of training she became regional champion both in the cadet and junior categories. In the 2000–01 season she took a silver medal in the Göppingen Junior World Cup. Sabre (fencing)
The sabre (US English: ''saber'', both pronounced ) is one of the three disciplines of modern fencing. The sabre weapon is for thrusting and cutting with both the cutting edge and the back of the blade (unlike other modern fencing weapons, the épée and foil, where the methods of making a hit are scored using only the point of the blade). The informal term ''sabreur'' refers to a male fencer who follows the discipline; ''sabreuse'' is the female equivalent. The World Fencing Championships is an annual competition in fencing organized by the Fédération Internationale d'Escrime (FIE; ''International Fencing Federation'' in English). The European Fencing Championships is an annual top-level European fencing competition organized by the European Fencing Confederation. History The first competition bearing the name of "European Fencing Championships" was held in Paris in 1921. The International Fencing Federation (FIE) comprised only European federations at the time, with the exception of the United States. In 1936, on the 25th anniversary of the FIE and at the request of the Italian federation, the FIE congress decided to open the European Championships to all countries and granted retroactive recognition of the European Championships as World Championships. The Sabines (; lat, Sabini; it, Sabini, all exonyms) were an Italic people who lived in the central Apennine Mountains of the ancient Italian Peninsula, also inhabiting Latium north of the Anio before the founding of Rome. The Sabines divided into two populations just after the founding of Rome, which is described by Roman legend. The division, however it came about, is not legendary. The population closer to Rome transplanted itself to the new city and united with the preexisting citizenry, beginning a new heritage that descended from the Sabines but was also Latinized.
