Stedmans V
Stedmans V&S (or V&S for short) is a Canadian variety discount department store chain. Stedmans operates its stores mainly in smaller towns and cities in Canada. The chain's stores today are comparable in size and merchandise offered to similar chains such as Fields, SAAN (now defunct) and The Bargain! Shop, with a number of stores also offering such services as photo finishing, laminating, faxing and photocopying, and dry cleaning drop-off. The first store, in Brantford Ontario, started as a stationery store in 1907. During the 1950s and 1960s, there were over 1000 Stedmans and affiliated stores in Canada. The affiliated stores were privately owned variety stores operating under different names, though purchasing through Stedmans. A variety store (also five and dime (historic), pound shop, or dollar store) is a retail store that sells general merchandise, such as apparel, automotive parts, dry goods, toys, hardware, home furnishings, and a selection of groceries. Woolco
Woolco was an American-based discount retail chain. It was founded in 1962 in Columbus, Ohio, by the F. W. Woolworth Company. It was a full-line discount department store unlike the five-and-dime Woolworth stores which operated at the time. At its peak, Woolco had hundreds of stores in the US, as well as in Canada and the United Kingdom. While the American stores were closed in 1983, the chain remained active in Canada until it was sold in 1994 to rival Walmart, which was looking to enter the Canadian market. All of the former UK Woolco stores were sold by Kingfisher, who had bought the UK Woolworth business, to Gateway who subsequently sold them to Asda. Peavey Mart is a Red Deer, Alberta-based chain of hardware and agricultural supply stores owned by Peavey Industries LP. The chain was originally founded by the Peavey Company in 1967 as National Farmway Stores, and was renamed Peavey Mart in 1974. The chain was acquired by its Canadian management in 1984. The chain primarily operates in Western Canada. A shopping mall (or simply mall) is a North American term for a large indoor shopping center, usually anchored by department stores. Dry cleaning is any cleaning process for clothing and textiles using a solvent other than water. Dry cleaning still involves liquid, but clothes are instead soaked in a water-free liquid solvent. The Bargain! Shop Holdings, Inc., also known as TB!S, is a Canadian discount variety store chain operating in all English language, Anglophone Provinces and territories of Canada, provinces in Canada. The Bargain! Shop originated as a closeout store division of F.W. Woolworth Company, Woolworth Canada, developed out of some of the bankrupt assets of Bargain Harold's in 1991. The chain averaged and grew into 90 stores within just a year of its establishment. In late 1993, in order to try to make the Woolworth variety stores profitable in Canada, 101 of 123 Woolworth stores were converted to The Bargain!
