Steamboat, Oregon
Steamboat is an unincorporated community in Jackson County, Oregon, United States. It lies along Carberry Creek, a tributary of the Applegate River, in the Rogue River – Siskiyou National Forest. Slightly west of Steamboat is the Jackson– Josephine county border, and the border with California is about to the south. According to Oregon Geographic Names (OGN), the name ''Steamboat'' derives from a mining term, "steamboated", meaning worked out or not up to expectations. Steamboat Mine is slightly northeast of Steamboat. The community had a post office named ''Steamboat'' that operated from 1888 to 1915. Other geographic features in the state have been similarly named, for example Steamboat Mountain near Steamboat and Steamboat Creek in the Calapooya Mountains. Steamboat is an unincorporated community in Douglas County, Oregon, United States. It is located about 39 miles east of Roseburg on Oregon Route 138, near the confluence of the North Umpqua River with Steamboat Creek within the Umpqua National Forest. The name "Steamboat" was probably first applied to the creek sometime before the 1890s by area gold miners, after a term referring to disappointing mining claims. Calapooya Mountains
The Calapooya Mountains are a mountain range in Lane and Douglas counties of southwestern Oregon in the United States. The range runs for approximately west from the Cascade Range between Eugene on the north and Roseburg on the south. Geology The Calapooya Mountains are composed of volcanic rocks and newer sedimentary strata. The mountains have been deeply eroded by the Coast Fork Willamette River and its tributaries. In the southern drainage, the tributaries of the North Umpqua River have cut into the southern slopes. The soil is silty, clay loam formed from sandstone, sediment, and igneous rocks. Steamboat Creek (Umpqua River)
Steamboat Creek is a short tributary of the North Umpqua River in southwestern Oregon in the United States. Approximately long, the creek is located on a remote part of the upper North Umpqua in the Calapooia Mountains west of the Cascade Range. It rises in southeastern Lane County at and flows southwest to join the North Umpqua from the north at Steamboat. The North Umpqua and its tributaries renowned for its prolific runs of summer steelhead, including a high percentage of native fish. Steamboat Creek has been closed to fishing since 1932.
