Stavros Papastavrou
Stavros Papastavrou ( el, Σταύρος Παπασταύρου; born 1967) is a Greek politician. Education He studied law at the University of Athens and graduated in 1990 (valedictorian). He was granted a state scholarship and continued with graduate studies at Harvard University. Political career From 1989 to 1991 he was chairman of European Democrat Students, while from 1997 to 2001 Papastavrou was chairperson of the Democrat Youth Community of Europe. He was a candidate in 1999 Euro-elections with New Democracy (Greece), New Democracy but not elected. In 2004 when Nea Demokratia won the national elections in Greece, Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis appointed him International Secretary of New Democracy (Greece), New Democracy, the centre-right party of Greece. Yiannis Stournaras
Yannis (or Giannis) Stournaras ( el, Γιάννης Στουρνάρας; born 10 December 1956) is a Greek economist who has been the Governor of the Bank of Greece since June 2014. Previously, he had been the Greek Minister of Finance from 5 July 2012 serving until 10 June 2014. As every Governor of an IMF member country, he is on the Board of Governors of the International Monetary Fund. Early life and education Stournaras received his undergraduate degree in economics from the University of Athens in 1978. He received a Master's degree (MPhil) and doctorate (DPhil) in economic theory and policy from the University of Oxford in 1980 and 1982 respectively. New Democracy (Greece) Politicians
New Democracy, or the New Democratic Revolution, is a concept based on Mao Zedong's Bloc of Four Social Classes theory in post-revolutionary China which argued originally that democracy in China would take a path that was decisively distinct from that in any other country. He also said every colonial or semi-colonial country would have its own unique path to democracy, given that particular country's own social and material conditions. Mao labeled representative democracy in the Western nations as Old Democracy, characterizing parliamentarianism as just an instrument to promote the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie/ land-owning class through manufacturing consent. He also found his concept of New Democracy in contrast with the Soviet-style dictatorship of the proletariat which he assumed would be the dominant political structure of a post-capitalist world. Panama Papers
The Panama Papers ( es, Papeles de Panamá) are 11.5 million leaked documents (or 2.6 terabytes of data) that were published beginning on April 3, 2016. The papers detail financial and attorney–client information for more than 214,488 offshore entities. The documents, some dating back to the 1970s, were created by, and taken from, former Panamanian offshore law firm and corporate service provider Mossack Fonseca. The documents contain personal financial information about wealthy individuals and public officials that had previously been kept private. The publication of these documents made it possible to establish the prosecution of Jan Marsalek, who is still a person of interest to a number of European governments due to his revealed links with Russian intelligence, and international financial fraudsters David and Josh Baazov. Lagarde List
The Lagarde List is a spreadsheet containing roughly 2,000 potential tax evaders with undeclared accounts at Swiss HSBC bank's Geneva branch. It is named after former French finance minister Christine Lagarde, who in October 2010 passed it on to Greek officials to help them crack down on tax evasion. However, it was only two years later the list became known to a wider public, when Greek journalist Kostas Vaxevanis published it in his magazine '' Hot Doc'', protesting against the Greek government's failure to launch an investigation. The ''Lagarde list'' is only a subset of a much larger data set, known as the ''Falciani list'', with around 130,000 names of HSBC customers captured by the French police. June 2023 Greek Legislative Election
Snap parliamentary elections were held in Greece on 25 June 2023. All 300 seats in the Hellenic Parliament were contested. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called for the snap vote after the May 2023 Greek legislative election, May 2023 elections did not result in any party gaining a majority, although his centre-right New Democracy (Greece), New Democracy made unanticipated gains and increased its share of the vote. As a result, no coalition government was formed by any of the parties eligible to do so. In contrast to the May elections, the June vote used a majority bonus system, making a majority government more likely. On 25 May 2023, as required by Greece's constitution, President Katerina Sakellaropoulou appointed Ioannis Sarmas as caretaker prime minister until the formation of the next government following the elections.
