Stavros (name)
Stavros (Σταύρος ) is a Greek name. It comes from σταυρóς, the Christian cross, but is distinguished from it by having the accent on the first syllable rather than the second. (''cf.'' Christos, as given name and surname). The word root comes from the verb ἵστημι which means "I make something stand, I stop". Unlike many other names of Greek origin (e.g. Alexander, Nicholas, Peter, Stephen) that have been adopted by many languages, Stavros is used as a given name most commonly by Greeks. Greek ( el, label=Modern Greek, Ελληνικά, Elliniká, ; grc, Ἑλληνική, Hellēnikḗ) is an independent branch of the Indo-European family of languages, native to Greece, Cyprus, southern Italy (Calabria and Salento), southern Albania, and other regions of the Balkans, the Black Sea coast, Asia Minor, and the Eastern Mediterranean. Stavros Halkias ( el, Σταύρος Χαλκιάς; born February 11, 1989) is an American stand-up comedian and podcaster. Active since the early 2010s, he is a nationally touring comic who came to prominence as a founding co-host of the podcast ''Cum Town''. Early life Halkias was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, to Greek immigrant parents (a Macedonian mother and Athenian father) and attended the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, a public high school where he played football. Stavros Malas ( el, Σταύρος Μαλάς; born 10 June 1967) is a Cypriot geneticist, academic and politician who served in the government of Cyprus as health minister from 2011 to 2012. Previously, he was a Special Advisor to the European Commissioner for Health from 2008 to 2009. Malas was appointed to the government of Cyprus as Minister of Health in August 2011. Stavros Lambrinidis ( el, Σταύρος Λαμπρινίδης; born 6 February 1962) is a Greek lawyer and politician who has served as the Ambassador of the European Union to the United States since March 2019. He previously served as the European Union Special Representative for Human Rights from 2012 to 2019 and Minister for Foreign Affairs from June 2011 to November 2011. Stavros Labrakis ( gr, Σταύρος Λαμπράκης; born 26 February 1970) is a Greek former football player, and manager. He is currently serving as general manager for Greek Football League club Ergotelis. Playing career Labrakis started his football career with local side Kaminia F.C. He then went on to play for Irodotos, Ergotelis, Ialysos and A.O. Agersani Naxos, before returning to Ergotelis in 2000. Stavros Kouyioumtzis, also Kougioumtzis, Kouyoumtzis, or Koujioumtzis, (23 July 1932 – 12 March 2005) ( el, Σταύρος Κουγιουμτζής ) is one of the most significant Greek music composers of the 20th century. Kouyioumtzis was born in Thessaloniki in 1932. His family were refugees from Asia Minor. He wrote his first song in 1960. quickly becoming a prolific writer, whose work was covered by many of the leading Greek singers. In the late 1960s, he began working with the then 19-year-old George Dalaras. Stavros Kostopoulos ( el, Σταύρος Κωστόπουλος, 14 September 1900 – 23 June 1968) was a Greek banker and politician. Biography He was born in Kalamata and he was the son of the banker Ioannis Kostopoulos. He attended the 1st Gymnasium in Kalamata. He studied law at the University of Athens and Political Sciences at the University of Paris, where he received his doctorate degree. He dealt with the banking industry, in which the family already had developed significant activity. He was a member (1937-1951) and President (1951-1953) of the board of the Commercial Credit Bank. Haralambos-Stavros Kontonis ( el, Χαράλαμπος - Σταύρος Κοντονής, b. 1963) is a Greek lawyer and politician, member of parliament from Zakynthos for Syriza since 2012, and was Deputy Minister for Sport in the Cabinet of Alexis Tsipras.
