Staunton Street
Staunton Street () is a street in Central and Sheung Wan, on Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong. Together with the upper section of Elgin Street, it is the heart of the Soho entertainment area, featuring a number of restaurants, bars and shops. It was named after George Thomas Staunton. Location The street runs on the contour of a hill, and is bounded by Shing Wong Street and Old Bailey Street. It crosses or has junctions with Shelley Street, Graham Street, Peel Street, Elgin Street and Aberdeen Street. Aberdeen Street marks the border between Sheung Wan and Central. Old Bailey Street
Old Bailey Street is located in Central, Hong Kong. The name is derived from the Old Bailey, the Central Criminal Court in central London, United Kingdom. Location Old Bailey Street runs downhill from Caine Road in the south to Hollywood Road in the north. Along the way, it has junctions with Chancery Lane () and Staunton Street. History Victoria Gaol (later Victoria Prison), the first prison in Hong Kong, was built in 1841. As the population in Hong Kong grew, a larger prison was needed and in 1925 construction began in Stanley. Later that year, a new prison opened as Stanley Prison where those sentenced to more than a year in detention were sent. Old Bailey Street was built after the completion of the Victoria Gaol. It connected Hollywood Road right to the entrance of the prison. The road used to be called "the long slope" by locals. Dr Sun Yat-sen Historical Trail
The Dr Sun Yat-sen Historical Trail () was set up in November 1996 by the Central and Western District Council to commemorate the 130th birthday of Sun Yat-sen. It includes 16 spots in the areas of Central, Hong Kong, Central and Sheung Wan in Hong Kong, related to the life of Sun Yat-sen and other revolutionaries in the late Qing Dynasty, Qing era. Originally the Sun Yat-sen Historical Trail had 13 markers; in 2001, it was renovated and renamed, and two spots (now the 1st and the 7th spots) were added to it. In 2018, the trail was further updated under a Revitalization Project, where artists were commissioned by the government to create art at each location. There are multiple bronze markers embedded in sidewalks and handrails throughout the city, noting the trail. Although about 600m north of the trail, the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park in Sai Ying Pun contains a large concrete map of the trail near its main gate. Revive China Society
The Hsing Chung Hui (Hanyu Pinyin romanization: Xīngzhōnghuì), translated as the Revive China Society (興中會), the Society for Regenerating China, or the Proper China Society was founded by Sun Yat-sen on 24 November 1894 to forward the goal of establishing prosperity for China and as a platform for future revolutionary activities. It was formed during the First Sino-Japanese War, after a string of Chinese military defeats exposed corruption and incompetence within the imperial government of the Qing dynasty. The Revive China Society went through several political re-organizations in later years and eventually became the party known as the Kuomintang. As such, the contemporary Kuomintang considers its founding date to be the establishment of Revive China Society. Central–Mid-Levels Escalator
The Central–Mid-Levels escalator and walkway system in Hong Kong is the longest outdoor covered escalator system in the world. The system covers over in distance and traverses an elevation of over from bottom to top. It opened in 1993 to provide an improved link between Central and the Mid-Levels on Hong Kong Island. The escalators at top stage of the escalator system between Robinson Road and Conduit Road have been replaced, and went operational on 11 July 2018. In early 2019, three refurbished escalators between Mosque Street and Robinson Road went operational. In June 2019, two replaced escalators between Caine Road and Elgin Street opened to the public. The escalator between Gage Street and Wellington Street is currently under refurbishment. Aberdeen Street
Aberdeen Street is a border street dividing Sheung Wan and Central on Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong. It ascends from Queen's Road Central to Caine Road in Mid-Levels. Peel Street is located in Central, Hong Kong. It is named after Robert Peel, the two-time British prime minister. Shelley Street () is a street in Central, Hong Kong. It is a ladder street and the Central–Mid-Levels escalators run along the entire length of the street. Name The street is named after Adolphus Edward Shelley, an early British colonial administrator. The second son of Sir John Shelley, 6th Baronet, he arrived unemployed in Hong Kong from India in June 1844 with vague recommendation letters from Lord Stanley, the then Secretary of State for War and the Colonies, and soon became Auditor General until 1846. Shelley was described in a private letter by Sir John Francis Davis, the second Governor of Hong Kong, to Lord Grey as "dissipated, in debt, negligent, guilty of falsehood, and quite unfit for the high office". In an 1844 letter to James Matheson, Alexander Matheson described Shelley as a "swindler". Shing Wong Street
Shing Wong Street () is a street on the hill slope of Sheung Wan and Mid-Levels, Hong Kong. The street extends from Gough Street at its lowest to Caine Road highest. The street is one of ladder streets in Hong Kong, made of stone steps, in the section between Hollywood Road and Caine Road. Between Hollywood Road and Staunton Street, a large terrace at the street east erects two former staff quarters of Hong Kong Police Force built in 1950s, which have been converted into PMQ. The terrace was constructed for the old campus of Queen's College earlier, the largest building in Hong Kong at the time. The Staunton Street ends at Shing Wong Street and Bridges Street extends it west. Bridges Street Market is located their junction.
