Statistica (journal)
''Statistica'' is a quarterly peer-reviewed open access scientific journal dealing with methodological and technical aspects of statistics and statistical analyses in the various scientific fields. It was established in 1931 as the ''Supplemento statistico ai nuovi problemi di Politica, Storia ed Economia'' (English: ''Statistical Supplement to the New Problems of Politics, History and Economics'') and obtained its current title in 1941. It is published by the University of Bologna and is an historical Italian journal in the field of statistics. The founding editor-in-chief was Paolo Fortunati and Italo Scardovi was editor from 1981 till 2004. The current editor-in-chief is Christian Hennig (University of Bologna). Statistics
Statistics (from German language, German: ''wikt:Statistik#German, Statistik'', "description of a State (polity), state, a country") is the discipline that concerns the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data. In applying statistics to a scientific, industrial, or social problem, it is conventional to begin with a statistical population or a statistical model to be studied. Populations can be diverse groups of people or objects such as "all people living in a country" or "every atom composing a crystal". Carlo Emilio Bonferroni
Carlo Emilio Bonferroni (28 January 1892 – 18 August 1960) was an Italian mathematician who worked on probability theory. Biography Bonferroni studied piano and conducting in Turin Conservatory and at University of Turin under Giuseppe Peano and Corrado Segre, where he obtained his laurea. During this time he also studied at University of Vienna and ETH Zurich. During World War I, he was an officer among the engineers. Bonferroni held a position as assistant professor at the Polytechnic University of Turin, and in 1923 took up the chair of financial mathematics at the Economics Institute of the University of Bari. In 1933 he transferred to University of Florence, where he held his chair until his death. Bonferroni is best known for the Bonferroni inequalities (a generalization of the union bound), and for the Bonferroni correction in statistics (which he did not invent, but which is related to the Bonferroni inequalities). An academy ( Attic Greek: Ἀκαδήμεια; Koine Greek Ἀκαδημία) is an institution of secondary or tertiary higher learning (and generally also research or honorary membership). The name traces back to Plato's school of philosophy, founded approximately 385 BC at Akademia, a sanctuary of Athena, the goddess of wisdom and skill, north of Athens, Greece. Etymology The word comes from the ''Academy'' in ancient Greece, which derives from the Athenian hero, '' Akademos''. Outside the city walls of Athens, the gymnasium was made famous by Plato as a center of learning. The sacred space, dedicated to the goddess of wisdom, Athena, had formerly been an olive grove, hence the expression "the groves of Academe". Emerging Sources Citation Index
The Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) is a citation index produced since 2015 by Thomson Reuters, and now by Clarivate. According to the publisher, the index includes "peer-reviewed publications of regional importance and in emerging scientific fields". The ESCI is accessible through the Web of Science, together with other Clarivate indexes. As of June 2021, all journals indexed in ESCI are also included within the Journal Citation Reports. While these journals still do not receive an impact factor, they do contribute citations to the calculation of other journals' impact factors. Estelle Bee Dagum
Estela (Estelle) Bee Dagum is an Argentine and Canadian economist and statistician who was a professor "chiara fama" of statistical sciences at the University of Bologna. She is known for her research on time series analysis, and in particular for developing the X-11-ARIMA method of seasonal adjustment, which became widely used and is a predecessor to X-12-ARIMA and later methods. Dagum is the author of the books ''Benchmarking, Temporal Distribution, and Reconciliation Methods for Time Series'' (with Pierre A. Cholette, Springer, 2006) and ''Seasonal Adjustment Methods and Real Time Trend-Cycle Estimation'' (with Silvia Bianconcini, Springer, 2016). Samuel Kotz
Samuel Kotz (30 August 1930 Harbin, China – 16 March 2010 Silver Spring, Maryland) was a professor and research scholar in the Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering, School of Engineering and Applied Science at The George Washington University since 1997 until his death on March 16, 2010. He was an author or editor of several standard reference works in statistics and probability theory. Early life Kotz was born in Harbin, China, to a Jewish family who has left Russia following the Russian Revolution. He moved to Israel in 1949, serving in the Israeli Air Force. Kotz immigrated to the United States in the 1950s and become an American citizen in the 1970s. Education Kotz studied electrical engineering at the Harbin Institute of Technology, graduating with honors in 1946. Bruno De Finetti
Bruno de Finetti (13 June 1906 – 20 July 1985) was an Italian probabilist statistician and actuary, noted for the "operational subjective" conception of probability. The classic exposition of his distinctive theory is the 1937 "La prévision: ses lois logiques, ses sources subjectives," which discussed probability founded on the coherence of betting odds and the consequences of exchangeability. Life De Finetti was born in Innsbruck, Austria, and studied mathematics at Politecnico di Milano. He graduated in 1927 writing his thesis under the supervision of Giulio Vivanti.
