Staten Island Historical Society
Staten Island Historical Society is an organization devoted to the history of Staten Island and its neighboring communities, from the colonial period to the present day. The Society operates and interpreting Historic Richmond Town, the largest and most comprehensive historic village in New York City. It also collects and preserves the materials of everyday life, including the artifacts, archives, and buildings that tell the story; conducts and promotes research based on the museum’s collections; and shares the collection and knowledge with the public through creative and engaging interpretive activities. The Staten Island Historical Society was founded in 1856. By the mid-20th century, its members had embarked on an ambitious project to collect, preserve, and interpret the material culture of the region. Staten Island
Staten Island ( ) is a borough of New York City, coextensive with Richmond County, in the U.S. state of New York. Located in the city's southwest portion, the borough is separated from New Jersey by the Arthur Kill and the Kill Van Kull and from the rest of New York by New York Bay. Historic Richmond Town
Historic Richmond Town is an authentic town and farm museum complex in the neighborhood of Richmondtown, Staten Island, in New York City. It is located near the geographical center of the island, at the junction of Richmond Road and Arthur Kill Road. Staten Island Historical Society and Historic Richmond Town are two different names for the same organization, reflecting its long history and evolution. The town was named Richmond Town in the early 18th century when it was formerly a county seat and commercial center, having contained the former courthouse of Richmond County, and is coterminous with the borough of Staten Island. Living History
Living history is an activity that incorporates historical tools, activities and dress into an interactive presentation that seeks to give observers and participants a sense of stepping back in time. Although it does not necessarily seek to reenact a specific event in history, living history is similar to, and sometimes incorporates, historical reenactment. Charles W
The F/V ''Charles W'', also known as Annie J Larsen, is a historic fishing schooner anchored in Petersburg, Alaska. At the time of its retirement in 2000, it was the oldest fishing vessel in the fishing fleet of Southeast Alaska, and the only known wooden fishing vessel in the entire state still in active service. Launched in 1907, she was first used in the halibut fisheries of Puget Sound and the Bering Sea as the ''Annie J Larsen''. In 1925 she was purchased by the Alaska Glacier Seafood Company, refitted for shrimp trawling, and renamed ''Charles W'' in honor of owner Karl Sifferman's father. The company was one of the pioneers of the local shrimp fishery, a business it began to phase out due to increasing competition in the 1970s. Loring McMillen
Loring McMillen (March 10, 1906 – March 19, 1991) was Staten Island's official historian who preserved the works of Alice Austen and worked to restore Historic Richmond Town. Biography He was born in Staten Island on March 10, 1906. He attended Union College in Schenectady, New York and he took courses in architecture at Columbia University. In 1928 he went to work for Bell Telephone, designing cable tracks and cable conduits until retiring in 1966. He became Staten Island's official historian in 1934. He died on March 19, 1991 in Richmondtown, at age 85. He was succeeded as Staten Island Borough Historian by Richard B. Dickenson.
