State University System Of Florida Libraries
The State University System of Florida Libraries is the academic library system of the State University System of Florida (SUS). The library system, which serves Florida's twelve public universities, is one of the largest in the world, with more than 18 million items. Though each campus library is separate, they share a reciprocal borrowing agreement known as the Florida Distance Learning Initiative, signed on February 9, 1999. The physical collections are scattered across each of the SUS campuses. Their collections and stand-alone library buildings are listed below. Due to organizational differences, having more libraries does not directly translate into a higher volume of specific collections of materials. The Florida State University College of Medicine, located in Tallahassee, Florida, is one of sixteen colleges composing the Florida State University. The college, created in 2000, is an accredited medical school, offering the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree for physicians. The Florida State University School of Information is a school within the Florida State University College of Communication and Information. It was founded in 1947, when Florida State University was founded, as the School of Library Training and Service (SOLTAS). It changed its name in 1968 to the School of Library Science. Another name change occurred in 1981 when the faculty voted to change the name to the School of Library and Information Science in preparation for the opening of the School's new building (the current facility) later in 1981. The law school borders the southeast quadrant of the University's campus, near the Donald L. Tucker Center, an arena and part of the Tallahassee civic center area.
