State Theatre (Ann Arbor, Michigan)
The State Theatre is a movie palace in Ann Arbor, Michigan, designed by C. Howard Crane in the Art Deco style. The State was built by W.S. Butterfield Theatres, which also operated the nearby Michigan Theater. The non-profit Michigan Theater Foundation has operated the theater since 1999, complementing the Michigan's programming. The State's current 4 screens are located on the balcony of the former 1900-seat auditorium. A ground-floor retail space replaced the original auditorium's main floor in 1989, housing an Urban Outfitters store until 2020. The retail space now houses a small Target store. The theater's central location and distinctive green, yellow and red marquee have made it an icon of Ann Arbor's downtown. History Predecessors W.S. Butterfield Theaters operated five theaters in Ann Arbor in 1940, including the Majestic Theater on Maynard Street, converted in 1907 from a roller rink. The dates given in the subject headings are approximate. The light source for most projectors in the early period was limelight, which did not require an electricity supply. Between approximately 1905 and 1915, two factors combined to transform the role of the projectionist into a ... First Run (filmmaking)
In cinematic parlance, a film in its first run has been recently released. In North America, new films attract the majority of their theatrical viewers in the first few weeks after their release. In North America, different movie theatres pay different rates to show films depending on how recently they have been released. In 1946, the Supreme Court of the United States found major film distributors in violation of antitrust laws when they precluded independent theaters from screening first-run films.See Bigelow v. RKO Radio Pictures, Inc., 327 U.S. 251 (1946) Some older, smaller, or poorly outfitted neighborhood or discount theatres, or those in less desirable locations, specialize in showing films during their second run. These theatres get to keep a larger share of the ticket fees and often charge a lower ticket price. A marquee is most commonly a structure placed over the entrance to a hotel, theatre, casino, train station, or similar building. It often has signage stating either the name of the establishment or, in the case of theatres, the play or movie and the artist(s) appearing at that venue. The marquee is sometimes identifiable by a surrounding cache of light bulbs, usually yellow or white, that flash intermittently or as chasing lights. Etymology The current usage of the modern English word ''marquee,'' that in US English refers specifically to a canopy projecting over the main entrance of a theater, which displays details of the entertainment or performers, was documented in the academic journal ''American Speech'' in 1926: "''Marquee'', the front door or main entrance of the big top." In British English "marquee" refers more generally to a large tent, usually for social uses. The English word ''marquee'' is derived from the Middle French word '' marquise'' (the final /z/ probably ...
