State Route 283 (Alabama)
State Route 283 (SR 283) is a route that serves as a connection between US 411 in the central business district of Centre and US 411 on the eastern edge of the town in Cherokee County. Route description SR 283 begins at its intersection with US 411 in the central business district of Centre. From this point, the route travels in a northeasterly direction as Cedar Bluff Road where it meets US 411 Truck and SR 68 and turns in an easterly direction. SR 283 then briefly travels to the east before turning to the southeast en route to its eastern terminus at US 411 in eastern Centre. Centre, Alabama
Centre is a city in Cherokee County, Alabama, United States. At the 2020 census, the population was 3,587. The city is the county seat of Cherokee County. History Cherokee County was created on January 9, 1836, and named for the Cherokee people who once lived in the area. The famous Cherokee chief Pathkiller lived in Turkeytown near the present town of Centre. In 1836 the newly founded town of Cedar Bluff became the county seat, but in 1844 the county seat was moved to the more centrally located town of Centre. The name was chosen, and carries the British English spelling, because of this central location in the county. In 2011, Centre began allowing the sale of alcoholic beverages, and is no longer a dry city. Geography Centre is located slightly west of the center of Cherokee County at 34°9'33.052" North, 85°40'29.071" West (34.159181, -85.674742). Cherokee County, Alabama
Cherokee County, Alabama is a county located in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 census, the population was 24,971. Its county seat is Centre. The county is named for the Cherokee tribe. History The area included in today's Cherokee County, for centuries, had belonged to the Muscogee (Creek) Nation of Native Americans. Cherokees began moving into the area a generation before the forced Indian Removal. To this day, there are few Native Americans in Cherokee County. On January 9, 1836, the Alabama legislature created Cherokee County with its present boundaries. Two years later, the United States government removed, by force, all Cherokees who had refused to leave on what would become known as the Trail of Tears. State Route 68 (SR 68) is a state highway in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Alabama. The western terminus of the highway is at an intersection with SR 75 slightly northeast of Albertville. The highway continues until it reaches the Georgia state line becoming Georgia State Route 114 (SR 114). Route description SR 68 begins at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains northeast of Albertville. There are numerous curves along the highway as it travels through DeKalb County. The highway maintains a generally eastward trajectory between Albertville and Collinsville.
