State Route 137 (Alabama)
State Route 137 (SR 137) is a state highway that serves as a north–south connection between the Florida state line near Wing and Andalusia. It travels through the southwestern part of Covington County. SR 137 serves as a continuation of Florida State Road 189 (SR 189) upon crossing into Alabama at its southern terminus and ends at US 29 southwest of Carolina. Route description SR 137 begins at the Florida state line where SR 189 transitions to SR 137 south of Wing. From this point, SR 137 follows a northerly course through the Conecuh National Forest en route to its northern terminus at US 29 ( internally designated as SR 15) southwest of Carolina. Covington County (briefly Jones County), is a county located in the south central portion of the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 census the population was 37,570. Its county seat is Andalusia. Its name is in honor of Brigadier General Leonard Covington of Maryland and Mississippi, who died in the War of 1812. History Covington County was established on December 17, 1821. It leads from U.S. Route 98 in downtown Fort Walton Beach to just east of State Road 85 at the Eglin AFB West Gate where its southern section terminates. The northern section begins at an intersection with State Road 4 in Baker, Florida north to the Alabama / Florida state line where Alabama State Route 137 begins upon crossing the Alabama state line. The common name for the southern portion of the highway is Beal Parkway from its origin at U.S. Route 98 to its intersection with Green Acres Road. At that junction the road becomes Lewis Turner Boulevard to its termination at the Eglin AFB gate. Both segments were once connected through Eglin AFB. Conecuh National Forest
The Conecuh National Forest in southern Alabama covers , along the Alabama - Florida line in Covington and Escambia counties. Topography is level to moderately sloping, broad ridges with stream terraces and broad floodplains. The Conecuh Trail winds 20 miles (30 km) through Alabama's coastal plain. The trail was built by the Youth Conservation Corps. Each year, beginning in 1976, the young people of the Corps extend the trail through park-like longleaf pine stands, hardwood bottomlands, and other plant communities of the Conecuh National Forest. The name Conecuh is believed to be of Muskogee origin. It means "land of cane," which is appropriate because the trail runs through canebrakes in several sections. Situated just above the Florida panhandle, the forest has a distinct southern flavor of mist-laden hardwood swamps, pitcher plant bogs, and southern coastal plain pine forest.
