State Highway 198 (Texas)
State Highway 198 (SH 198) is a state highway in Henderson, Kaufman, Van Zandt counties in Texas, United States, that runs between Malakoff and Canton. SH 198 was designated in 1933, and its current routing was established in 1983. Route description History SH 198 was originally designated on August 15, 1933, from Canton to Mabank. On January 21, 1936, it was extended to Corsicana. On October 6, 1943, this extension was canceled. On May 19, 1983, it was extended south to Malakoff, replacing part of FM 90. Malakoff is a city in Henderson County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,179 at the 2020 census. The city is named after a Russian fort of Malakoff ( Malakhov kurgan), which played a pivotal role during the siege of Sevastopol during the Crimean War. Mabank ( ) is a town in Henderson, Van Zandt and Kaufman counties in the U.S. state of Texas. Its population was 3,035 at the 2010 census, up from 2,151 at the 2000 census. Geography Mabank is located in the southeast corner of Kaufman County at (32.368011, –96.105573). The town limits extend south into Henderson County. U.S. Route 175 runs through the north side of the town, leading northwest to Kaufman and southeast to Athens. Downtown Dallas is northwest of Mabank. Canton is a city in and the county seat of Van Zandt County in East Texas, United States. It is located about 40 miles west of Tyler. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 4,229. The city sustained severe damage on April 29, 2017, from several tornadoes, and two years later from another tornado that struck downtown on May 29, 2019, both of which occurred just before First Monday Trade Days, the popular flea market extravaganza which draws thousands to the city each month. Henderson County is a County (United States), county in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census, its population was 82,150. The county seat is Athens, Texas, Athens. The county is named in honor of James Pinckney Henderson, the first attorney general of the Republic of Texas, and secretary of state for the republic. He later served as the first governor of Texas. Kaufman County is a county in the northeast area of the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 145,310. Its county seat is Kaufman. Both the county, established in 1848, and the city were named for David S. Kaufman, a U.S. Representative and diplomat from Texas. Van Zandt County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas, in the northeastern part of the state. As of the 2020 census, its population was 59,541. Its county seat is Canton. Corsicana is a city in Navarro County, Texas, United States. It is located on Interstate 45, 56 miles northeast of Waco, Texas. The population was 23,770 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Navarro County, and an important Agri-business center. History Founded in 1848, Corsicana was named by José Antonio Navarro after the Mediterranean island of Corsica, the birthplace of his father.
