State Highway 119 (Texas)
State Highway 119 (SH 119) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Texas that runs from Stockdale to Alt. US 77 and U.S. Highway 183 north of Goliad. Route description SH 119 begins at an intersection with U.S. Route 87 and State Highway 97 just southeast of the city of Stockdale. It travels southeast through farm and ranchland before reaching Yorktown. The route continues southeast, passing through the unincorporated town of Weesatche before reaching its southern terminus at an intersection with U.S. Route 183 and U.S. Route 77 Alternate, about 9 miles north of Goliad. History The route was originally proposed on August 24, 1925 from Stockdale to Goliad. Construction started on December 21, 1926, and the highway was officially numbered 119. On January 16, 1928, the section north of Yorktown was cancelled. On February 24, 1930, it extended south to Goliad State Park. U.S. Highway 87 (US 87) is a north–south United States highway (though it is signed east–west in New Mexico) that runs for 1,998 miles (3,215 km) from northern Montana to southern Texas, making it the longest north-south road to not have a "1" in its number and the third longest north-south road in the country, behind U.S. Route 41, U.S. 41 and U.S. Route 1, U.S. 1. Most of the portion from Billings, Montana to Raton, New Mexico is co-signed along Interstate 90, Interstates 90 and Interstate 25, 25. Cuero, TX
Cuero ( ) is a city in and the county seat of DeWitt County, Texas, United States. Its population was 8,128 at the 2020 census. History The city of Cuero had its start in the mid-19th century as a stopping point on the Chisholm Trail cattle route to Kansas. It was not recognized as a town until 1873, though, when it was officially founded. The city was named for the Spanish word "hide", referring to the leather made from animal hides. The industry was extremely short-lived, however, and gave way to various forms of ranching. The city had several Old West gunfights related to clan feuding following the Civil War. Cuero's population grew considerably in the 1870s and 1880s, as residents from the coastal town of Indianola, Texas, settled here after major hurricanes in this period destroyed sizeable portions of that city. State Highway 29 (Texas)
State Highway 29 (SH 29) runs from south of Menard, Texas, east to SH 95 in Circleville (6.0 miles north of Taylor) via Mason, Llano, Burnet, Liberty Hill, and Georgetown in central Texas, United States. In Georgetown, SH 29 is known as University Avenue and is the main east–west artery through the city, passing in front of Southwestern University, which has been on the same road since its Georgetown campus opened in 1873. An open house meeting at East View High School in Georgetown was held on September 1, 2015. The meeting's purpose was to review the upcoming plans on widening SH 29 from 2 lanes (80 ft.) to 6 lanes (160 ft.). Construction will not start until after the Summer of 2016 and will occur from Southwestern Blvd extending all the way to Hwy 95 in Circleville, TX. Weesatche ( ) is an unincorporated community in northern Goliad County, Texas, United States. It lies along State Highway 119 north of the city of Goliad, the county seat of Goliad County. Its elevation is 233 feet (71 m). Although Weesatche is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of 77993. The community is part of the Victoria, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Weesatche was founded around the year 1850 under the name of Middletown, being halfway between Clinton and Goliad, and its post office was established on 1855-11-22. However, confusion with a Middletown in Comal County led locals to rename the community after the sweet acacia tree; the community's name is a corruption of the plant's alternate name, ''huisache''.
