State Archives (Belgium)
The State Archives (french: Archives de l'État or AE, nl, Rijksarchief) is the institution which preserves the national archives of Belgium. It is a research institute of the Belgian Federal Science Policy Office (Belspo) under the Belgian Federal Government. The State Archives is composed of the National Archives in Brussels and 18 repositories throughout Belgium. Each repository has its own reading room, where the public can consult paper or digital archives in compliance with the rules and laws regarding the privacy of certain data. As a knowledge centre for historical information and archival sciences, the State Archives preserve of archives and of books . Karel Velle is the incumbent director-general. Camille Tihon
Camille Tihon (1890–1972) was a Belgian archivist and historian. Life Tihon was born in Remicourt, Belgium, on 25 June 1890. He studied at the University of Liège under Eugène Hubert and Karl Hanquet, graduating with a doctorate for a thesis on the rule of Robert of Berghes as Prince-Bishop of Liège.''La Principauté et le Diocèse de Liège sous Robert de Bergues, 1557-1564'' (Liège, 1923). From 1912 until his retirement in 1955 he worked at the Belgian State Archives, first at the State Archives in Mons and then on secondment to the State Archives in Liège, before transferring in 1919 to the Central State Archive in Brussels. Arthur Gaillard
Arthur Gaillard (1847–1912) was the head of the State Archives in Belgium from 1904 until his death. His career as an archivist began in 1872 and he worked his way up through all the ranks of the service to become its head. He instituted the practice of publishing summary inventories of the collections, many of which he prepared himself. Charles Piot (archivist)
Charles Piot (1812–1899) was a Belgian archivist, historian, numismatist and archaeologist who contributed 73 entries to the ''Biographie Nationale de Belgique''. Life Piot was born in Leuven on 17 October 1812, and was educated in the town.Camille Tihon, "Piot (Charles)", ''Biographie Nationale de Belgique''vol. 32(Brussels, 1964), 571-576. He graduated from the State University of Leuven as Doctor of Law on 27 November 1834. As a lover of history, he sought a position in the State Archives, and was appointed archivist second class by ministerial decree on 7 August 1840. His rival for the position, Alphonse Wauters, became archivist to the city of Brussels two years later. On 30 April 1847, Piot was promoted to archivist first class. Louis Prosper Gachard
Louis Prosper Gachard (12 March 1800 – 24 December 1885), Belgian man of letters, was born in Paris. He entered the administration of the national archives in 1826, and was appointed director-general in 1831, a post which he held for fifty-five years. During this long period he reorganized the service, added to the records by copies taken in other European collections, travelled for purposes of study, and carried on a wide correspondence with other keepers of records, and with historical scholars. He also edited and published many valuable collections of state papers; a full list of his various publications was printed in the ''Annuaire de l'Académie royale de Belgique'' by Ch. Piot in 1888, pp. 220–236. It includes 246 entries.
