The "State Anthem of Turkmenistan", also known as the "National Anthem of Independent Neutral Turkmenistan" ( tk, Garaşsyz, Bitarap Türkmenistanyň Döwlet Gimni), was adopted as the national anthem of Turkmenistan in 1996, then again with modified lyrics in 2008.''Turkmenistan to the Heights of the Golden Age'', Ashgabat, 2005. The music was composed by Turkmenistani composer Veli Mukhatov, who also composed the music of the Anthem of the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic, Turkmen SSR's regional anthem. The lyrics were originally written by the first president of Turkmenistan, Saparmurat Niyazov (also known as Turkmenbashi), who died on 21 December 2006. Less than two years after his death, the reference to Turkmenbashi in the chorus was replaced with "the people", and both the third and final verse and the chorus at the start of the piece were removed. Velimuhammet Muhadov or Welimuhammet Muhadow (Turkmen Cyrillic: Велимухаммет Мухадов; rus, links=no, Велимухаммед Мухатов, Velimukhammed Mukhatov; – 6 January 2005), also known as Veli Muhadov or Weli Muhadow (Turkmen Cyrillic: Вели Мухадов; rus, links=no, Вели Мухатов, Veli Mukhatov), was a Turkmen composer. He composed numerous works, including several film scores, the regional anthem of the Turkmen SSR (which was used in the 1990s as the Turkmen national anthem), and the current national anthem of Turkmenistan. He was awarded the title of People's Artist of the USSR in 1965, the Stalin Prize in 1951 and 1952, and the Order of Lenin twice. He was also twice a member of the Supreme Soviet. Gurbanguly Mälikgulyýewiç Berdimuhamedow (born 29 June 1957), also known as Arkadag (Cyrillic: Аркадаг, "protector"), is a Turkmen politician who served as the second president of Turkmenistan from 2006 to 2022. A dentist by profession, Berdimuhamedow served in the government of president Saparmurat Niyazov as the minister of health in 1997 and as the vice president in 2001.
