Start From Here
''Start From Here'' is the debut album by singer-songwriter Joanna Wang, released by Sony BMG Taiwan in January 2008. The album consists of two disks, featuring songs performed in English and Mandarin. It received mostly positive reviews and commercial success, with the sales of over 200,000 copies in Asia. Wang's rejection of the album Despite the album's success, Wang herself strongly dislikes the album, and the label of "jazz singer" under which she became known in Taiwan, in the wake of the album's success. In a Reddit 'Ask Me Anything', she wrote:''At 17, I signed my first contract with Sony Music Taiwan, a decision I would soon have extremely mixed feelings - regret, fear, frustration, arousal, and sometimes hunger.''''Long story short, the first two years was not what I expected and hoped for at all. After a lot of "no's, but's" and reluctant "yes's", at 19 I debuted with a shitastic record with the cheesiest and cliche 80's-esque music videos to very lame music that my ...

Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in European harmony and African rhythmic rituals. As jazz spread around the world, it drew on national, regional, and local musical cultures, which gave rise to different styles. New Orleans jazz began in the early 1910s, combining earlier brass band marches, French quadrilles, biguine, ragtime and blues with collective polyphonic improvisation. But jazz did not begin as a single musical tradition in New Orleans or elsewhere. In the 1930s, arranged dance-oriented swing big bands, Kansas City jazz (a hard-swinging, bluesy, improvisationa ...

Soul Music
Soul music is a popular music genre that originated in the African American community throughout the United States in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It has its roots in African-American gospel music and rhythm and blues. Soul music became popular for dancing and listening, where U.S. record labels such as Motown, Atlantic and Stax were influential during the Civil Rights Movement. Soul also became popular around the world, directly influencing rock music and the music of Africa. It also had a resurgence with artists like Erykah Badu under the genre neo-soul. Catchy rhythms, stressed by handclaps and extemporaneous body moves, are an important feature of soul music. Other characteristics are a call and response between the lead vocalist and the chorus and an especially tense vocal sound. The style also occasionally uses improvisational additions, twirls, and auxiliary sounds. Soul music reflects the African-American identity, and it stresses the importance of an African-Ameri ...

Joanna & Wang Ruo-lin
''Joanna & Wang Ruo-lin'' is the second studio album by Joanna Wang, released in January 2009. It comprises two discs, given two separate titles: the first, also titled Joanna & Wang Ruo-lin, is described in this article; disc 2 is titled ''The Adult Storybook'', under the name "New Tokyo Terror". The album's title includes Wang's English and Chinese names, thereby reflecting the duality of the singer and the songwriter. The first disc displays the performer and includes covers of works by other artists. Conversely, the second disc emphasizes the creative Wang, as every song on it was written by her. Although her father, co-producer Ji-ping "Bing" Wang (王治平), was involved in the album's production, Wang was given more freedom, enabling her to fully express herself through her music.

True (Spandau Ballet Song)
"True" is a song by English new wave band Spandau Ballet, released in April 1983 as the title track and third single from their third studio album. It was written by the band's guitarist/songwriter Gary Kemp to express his feelings for Altered Images lead singer Clare Grogan, influenced musically by songs of Marvin Gaye and Al Green he was listening to at the time, and lyrically by Green and The Beatles. It eventually reached number one on the UK chart in April 1983 and made the top 10 in several other countries, including the US, where it became their first song to reach the ''Billboard'' Hot 100. Kemp wanted to shift the sound of Spandau Ballet into soul and incorporated band member Steve Norman's newfound interest in the saxophone into his writing; the band also updated its look to suits for the song's music video and tour. "True" was recorded with most of the other tracks from the album at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas. The ''True'' album was then released ...

New York State Of Mind
"New York State of Mind" is a song written by Billy Joel that initially appeared on the album ''Turnstiles'' in 1976. Although it was never released as a single, it has become a fan favorite and a song that Joel plays regularly in concert. Joel famously played the song at The Concert for New York City, the October 2001 benefit concert for the New York City Fire and Police Departments and the loved ones of families of first responders lost during the terrorist attack on New York City on 9/11. He reprised that theme, playing it during his set at '' 12-12-12: The Concert for Sandy Relief'' at Madison Square Garden in New York City on December 12, 2012, where he changed lyrics to include the likes of "Breezy Point". Inspiration Joel wrote the song after returning to the East Coast from Los Angeles, where he had spent the previous three years. In fact, most of ''Turnstiles'' deals with Joel's cross-country relocation, including "Say Goodbye to Hollywood", "I've Loved These Days", " S ...
