Starke Taylor
Austin Starke Taylor Jr. (July 2, 1922 – October 27, 2014) was mayor of Dallas, Texas, from 1983 to 1987, and a cotton investor. Biography Taylor was born on July 2, 1922, in Paris, Texas, in Lamar County to Austin Starke Taylor Sr. and Veryl Georgette Lamb. He married Delores Myrlee Burris, daughter of Clarke E. Burris on August 29, 1942, in Durant, Oklahoma. They had three children: Austin Starke III, Janet Charlene, and Charles Claiborne. He and Mrs. Taylor divorced in 1973. He married Carolyn Wray Norman Markle on April 7, 1973, in Dallas. Starke Taylor graduated from Highland Park High School in 1939 where he was editor of the yearbook. In 1943 he graduated from Rice University, at the time called Rice Institute. While there he was elected president of the sophomore class. He served in the Navy during World War II. Wes Wise
Wes Wise (November 25, 1928 – December 9, 2022) was an American journalist and politician who served from 1971 to 1976 as a three-term mayor of Dallas, Texas. Early life and TV news career Wise was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, on November 25, 1928. Wise dropped out of high school at the age of fifteen upon the death of his father and begin work at a local radio station in Monroe, Louisiana. Although Wise earned a diploma by passing the high school equivalency test, he never graduated from college. He served in the United States Army for two years. Jack Wilson Evans (August 13, 1922 – June 5, 1997) was an American grocer and politician who served as mayor of Dallas, Texas. Biography Working from his youth in grocery stores in Dallas, Jack Evans joined the Army Air Corps in 1944. Upon returning to Dallas in 1947, he began Evans Lakewood Food Mart at the site of a previously closed Safeway store. He joined Cullum Companies, which operated several grocery brands including Tom Thumb stores (now a part of Safeway) in Dallas, in 1966 and eventually became the chairman and CEO of the company in 1986. Evans went to college at Southern Methodist University. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School (Dallas) in 1940. Norman Brinker, who owned or founded such restaurant chains as Chili's and Steak & Ale, reported Evans loaned him the money to open his third Steak & Ale restaurant in 1968, a key step to the eventual success of Brinker's restaurant empire.
