Star Rugby Club
Star Rugby Club is an amateur rugby club based in Southland, New Zealand. The club's senior team plays in the Southlandwide Premier Division for the Galbraith Shield. The club, which celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2011, has been home to three Southland centurions and a number of All Blacks. 125th Anniversary Team The club's 125th anniversary team was selected in 2011 by life members Bob Donnelly, Alan Blackler and Southland Times journalist Logan Savory. Southland Region
Southland ( mi, Murihiku) is New Zealand's southernmost region. It consists mainly of the southwestern portion of the South Island and Stewart Island/Rakiura. It includes Southland District, Gore District and the city of Invercargill. The region covers over 3.1 million hectares and spans over 3,400 km of coast. History The earliest inhabitants of Murihiku (meaning "the last joint of the tail") were Māori of the Waitaha iwi, followed later by Kāti Māmoe and Kāi Tahu. Southland Rugby Football Union
Rugby Southland (formerly the Southland Rugby Football Union) is the provincial rugby union who govern the Southland region of New Zealand. Their headquarters are at Rugby Park Stadium in Invercargill, which is also the home ground of the union's professional team, the Southland Stags who compete in the Mitre 10 Cup Championship Division and challenge for the Ranfurly Shield. Despite their proud history, no Southland team has ever won the top division of the New Zealand National Provincial Championship since organised competition began in 1976. However, they have won the NPC second division title five times and held the Ranfurly Shield seven times, most recently in 2011 where they defended the shield twice before losing it to Taranaki. The New Zealand national rugby union team, commonly known as the All Blacks ( mi, Ōpango), represents New Zealand in men's international rugby union, which is considered the country's national sport. The team won the Rugby World Cup in 1987, 2011 and 2015. They were the first country to win the Rugby World Cup 3 times. ''The Southland Times'' is the regional daily paper for Southland, including Invercargill, and neighbouring parts of Otago, in New Zealand. It is now owned by media business Stuff Ltd, formerly the New Zealand division of Fairfax Media. History ''The Southland Times'' was first established in 1862. The first edition was published on 12 November 1862 under the title of ''Invercargill Times''. The three founders were Gerard George Fitzgerald, John T. Downes, and Charles Reynolds. The name changed to ''The Southland Times'' in June 1864. Initially, it was published two or three times a week until it became a daily paper in 1875. Brian McKechnie
Brian John McKechnie (born 6 November 1953) is a former " double All Black" - representing New Zealand in both rugby union and cricket. Rugby career He played 26 matches for the All Blacks as a first five-eighth and fullback, most memorably being the player to kick the winning penalty goal against Wales in 1978 when Andy Haden dived out off a lineout near full-time and was apparently awarded a penalty (the referee later said the penalty was for a completely separate incident and was clearly visible in video footage) which would secure the "Grand Slam" for the All Blacks against the home country unions. Cricketing career As a cricketer, McKechnie was an economical right-arm pace bowler and useful lower-order batsman who played 14 one day games for the Black Caps, including the 1975 and 1979 World Cup tournaments in England. Billy Stead
Billy Stead, born John William Stead, (18 September 1877 – 21 July 1958) was a rugby union player born in Invercargill who played for New Zealand, the All Blacks, on their 1905–06 tour. Stead also played provincially for Southland, and later coached various teams, including Southland and the New Zealand Māori. A bootmaker by trade, he also co-authored The ''Complete Rugby Footballer'' with Dave Gallaher, and was a columnist for the ''Southland Times'', and ''New Zealand Truth''. Early rugby career Billy Stead was born in Invercargill on 18 September 1877, and one of his earliest exposures to rugby was watching Joe Warbrick with his New Zealand Native football team play against Southland. Bob Barber (rugby Player)
Robert John Barber (born 14 January 1945) is a former New Zealand rugby union player. A utility forward, Barber represented North Otago, Canterbury and Southland at a provincial level, and was a member of the New Zealand national side, the All Blacks, on their 1974 tour of Australia and Fiji. He played six matches on that tour but did not appear in any full test matches, although he did turn out in the game against Fiji. John Hardie (rugby Union)
John Hardie (born 27 July 1988) is a New Zealand born Scottish international rugby union player who plays for Newcastle Falcons. Hardie predominantly plays as an open side flanker, though he is also comfortable on the blindside. Having previously played for the Southland Stags in the Mitre 10 Cup and the Highlanders in the Super Rugby competition. Francis Turnbull Glasgow (17 August 1880 – 20 February 1939) was a New Zealand rugby union player. Joshua Bekhuis (born 26 April 1986) is a professional rugby union player who plays at lock for Honda Heat in the Japanese Top League competition. Playing career Provincial Rugby Bekhuis began his career with Southland in 2006 after a successful time with the Southland Boys' High School First XV. After making two starts in his debut season, he emerged as a regular starter during the 2007 Air New Zealand Cup. Corey Flynn
Corey Robert Flynn (born 5 January 1981) is a New Zealand rugby union player who currently plays for West Coast in the Heartland Championship. He plays in the position of hooker. Career Club career Flynn previously played provincial for Southland until he moved to Canterbury in 2003; has played Super Rugby rugby for the Crusaders; and has played in Top 14 for Toulouse.
