Star Guitar (foaled March 11, 2005 in Louisiana) is a retired Thoroughbred racehorse considered one of the most significant Louisiana-bred racehorses of all time. He won the Louisiana-bred Horse of the Year title 4 times, as well as the state's Champion Older Horse three times and the Champion Two Year Old Colt award. He retired as the richest Louisiana-bred horse of all time with earnings of $1.75 million. Background Star Guitar is a light bay stallion by Champion sire Quiet American, who also sired Triple Crown near miss Real Quiet, as well as Quiet Dance who produced, successful sire Horse of the Year and Breeders Cup Classic winner Saint Liam. Quiet American (April 29, 1986 – October 14, 2016) was an American thoroughbred racehorse foaled in Florida. He is out of the Dr. Fager mare Demure, by the Grade I winner Fappiano, son of Mr. Prospector. Purchased for $300,000 as a yearling at the 1987 Fall Fasig-Tipton Tartan Stable Dispersal Sale by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Quiet American was very lightly raced at 2 and 3 and didn't come into his own until age 4, where he won both the NYRA Mile and the San Diego Handicap. Stud career Retired to stud at Darley Stud in 1992, Quiet American produced multiple stakes winners, with the most famous being Kentucky Derby winner Real Quiet. In total he has sired over 50 stakes winners with a cumulative earnings of $57 million. Fair Grounds Race Course
Fair Grounds Race Course, often known as New Orleans Fair Grounds, is a thoroughbred racetrack and racino in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is operated by Churchill Downs Louisiana Horseracing Company, LLC. As early as 1838 Bernard de Marigny, Julius C Branch and Henry Augustine Tayloe, organized races at the "Louisiana Race Course" laid out on Gentilly Road, making it the second oldest site of horseracing in America still in operation, after Freehold Raceway and before the Saratoga Race Course. It began on April 10 and lasted for five days. In 1852 it was renamed the Union Race Course. In 2009, the Horseplayers Association of North America introduced a rating system for 65 Thoroughbred racetracks in North America. The Texas Mile is a land speed auto racing event in Beeville, Texas, at the Chase Field Industrial Complex. Participants, amateur and professional alike, from across the globe test their fastest standing 1-mile speeds in a wide range of vehicles. The bi-annual 3 day motorsports event takes place the last weekend of March and of October. History The first Texas Mile event was in October 2003 at the Goliad County Industrial Airpark, near Goliad, Texas, with 35 participants and relatively no spectators. Delta Downs Racetrack, Casino and Hotel is an American thoroughbred and quarter horse racetrack in Calcasieu Parish, near Vinton, Louisiana in the southwest portion of the state. The facility is owned by Boyd Gaming. History The track opened in September 1973, under the direction of Lee Berwick. Berwick was primarily looking for a recognized facility to run Quarter Horses, having earlier held races on his farm in St. Joseph, Louisiana. Delta Downs in Vinton would hold both Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred race meetings, some years in a mixed format. In the 1990s, the track was bought by developer Shawn Scott for $10 million. Shortly thereafter, it was sold for over $100 million to Boyd Gaming after a law was passed allowing for slot machines at Delta Downs. The Alysheba Stakes is a Grade II American Thoroughbred horse race for horses aged three and older over a distance of miles on the dirt held annually in early May on the Kentucky Oaks day meeting at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky during the spring meeting. History The Alysheba became the most recent addition to the Derby Week stakes with the inaugural running on 30 April 2004 as the sixth race on the undercard of the Kentucky Oaks day meeting. The New Orleans Classic Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans, Louisiana. Open to horses four years old and up, the race is run at a distance of one and one-eighth miles on the dirt. It currently offers a purse of $400,000. Graded Stakes Race
A graded stakes race is a thoroughbred horse race in the United States that meets the criteria of the American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA). A specific grade level (I, II, III or listed) is then assigned to the race, based on statistical analysis of the quality of the field in previous years, provided the race meets the minimum purse criteria for the grade in question. In Canada, a similar grading system is maintained by the Jockey Club of Canada. Graded stakes races are similar to Group races in Europe but the grading is more dynamic in North America. The grading system was designed in 1973 and first published in 1974.
