Star is a hamlet in central Alberta, Canada located within Lamont County. It lies along Highway 831, approximately north of Lamont and south of Highway 45. The Edna-Star colony, also called the Nebyliv colony, or the ''Ukrainian block settlement'' is the largest and oldest of the Ukrainian Canadian block settlements. Located east of Edmonton, in east-central Alberta, the boundaries of the block settlement include all or part of multiple municipal districts, within census divisions numbers 12 and 10. Background A block settlement is a type of rural ethnic enclave found throughout Western Canada. Lamont, Alberta
Lamont is a town in central Alberta, Canada. It is located east of Edmonton at the junction of Highway 15 and Highway 831. History Settlement began in the 1880s. The area's location along the Victoria Trail, which was used by travellers between Edmonton and Winnipeg through most of the 1800s, aided the area's growing prosperity. This Victoria Trail was a road that ran south of the river, the so-called "plain lainstrail." (A better known alternative route under the same name ran along the north bank and is now memorialized by the Victoria Trail in Edmonton.) The town was named in honour of Canadian politician John Henderson Lamont. Lamont was assigned a Royal Mail Canada post office in 1906, before being incorporated as a village in 1910. The Lamont Hospital opened in 1912, serving the entire region. Central Alberta is a region located in the Canadian province of Alberta. Central Alberta is the most densely populated rural area in the province. Area codes 587, 825, and 368 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the entire Canadian province of Alberta. They form an overlay with area code 403 of southern Alberta, and northern Alberta's 780. The province-wide overlay complex made ten-digit dialing mandatory throughout the province.
