Stanthorpe Soldiers Memorial
Stanthorpe Soldiers Memorial is a heritage-listed war memorial at Lock Street, Stanthorpe, Southern Downs Region, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Dornbusch & Connolly and built from 1925 to 1926 by N J Thompson & Sons. It is also known as Stanthorpe War Memorial. It was unveiled on 6 February 1926, by Sir William Glasgow, K.C.G. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 3 August 1995. History Built in honour of the soldiers of the district who participated in the Great War, the Stanthorpe Soldiers' Memorial was funded, as with many other such memorials across the state, by public subscription. Stanthorpe's memorial took the form of a park and rest house located on Foxton's Hill described at the time by ''The Queenslander'' as one of the lonely hills overlooking Stanthorpe. Stanthorpe is a rural town and locality in the Southern Downs Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Stanthorpe had a population of 5,406 people. The area surrounding the town is known as the Granite Belt. Geography Stanthorpe lies on the New England Highway near the New South Wales border from Brisbane via Warwick, north of Tenterfield and 811 m above sea level. Stanthorpe was developed around Quart Pot Creek which meanders from south-east through the centre of town and then out through the south-west, where its confluence with Spring Creek forms the Severn River. Fleurbaix is a locality in the Southern Downs Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Fleurbaix had a population of 56 people. Geography The north of the locality is hilly and undeveloped; it is part of the Herries Range. The south of the locality is also hilly. The area in-between is flatter and is used for farming. Shire Of Stanthorpe
The Shire of Stanthorpe was a local government area of Queensland, Australia on the Queensland-New South Wales border. It was on the Great Dividing Range and was part of the Granite Belt. Its main industries included fruit and vegetable growing, wineries and tourism, and sheep and cattle grazing. The Shire, administered from the town of Stanthorpe, covered an area of , and existed from 1879 until 2008, when it amalgamated with the Shire of Warwick to become the Southern Downs Region. El Arish is a heritage-listed house and gardens at 94 Greenup Street, Stanthorpe, Southern Downs Region, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1880s & early 1920s to 1930s. History The garden and house which comprise El Arish were established in the early 1920s by Major Allan and Isabella Chauvel on the site of a former market garden in Stanthorpe. The major impetus to development in Stanthorpe occurred in 1872 with the start of the practice of alluvial tin mining after discoveries of the valuable metal in the area earlier in the mid 1850s.
