Stanley Saville
Stanley Herbert Saville (21 November 1889 – 22 February 1966) was an English first-class cricketer active 1910–31 who played for Middlesex and Cambridge University. The elder brother of Clifford Saville, he was born in Tottenham; died in Eastbourne. First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but it was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. A significant omission of the ICC ruling was any attempt to define first-class cricket retrospectively. Middlesex County Cricket Club
Middlesex County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Middlesex which has effectively been subsumed within the ceremonial county of Greater London. The club was founded in 1864 but teams representing the county have played top-class cricket since the early 18th century and the club has always held first-class status. Middlesex have competed in the County Championship since the official start of the competition in 1890 and have played in every top-level domestic cricket competition in England. The club plays most of its home games at Lord's Cricket Ground, which is owned by Marylebone Cricket Club, in St John's Wood. Cambridge University Cricket Club
Cambridge University Cricket Club, first recorded in 1817, is the representative cricket club for students of the University of Cambridge. Depending on the circumstances of each individual match, the club has always been recognised as holding first-class status. The university played List A cricket in 1972 and 1974 only. It has not played top-level Twenty20 cricket. With some 1,200 members, home matches are played at Fenner's. The club has three men's teams (Blues, Crusaders and the Colleges XI) and one women's team which altogether play nearly 100 days of cricket each season. The inaugural University Match between Cambridge and Oxford University Cricket Club was played in 1827 and the match was the club's sole remaining first class fixture each season until 2020. Clifford Saville
Clifford Allen Saville (5 February 1892 – 8 November 1917) was an English first-class cricketer active in 1914 who played for Middlesex in three first-class matches. He served in the British Army during the First World War as an officer in the East Yorkshire Regiment, in the course of which he was killed in action in November 1917. Life and military service Saville was born to Walter and Emma Saville at Tottenham in February 1892. He was educated at Marlborough College, from where he progressed to study medicine. Saville made three appearances in first-class cricket in the 1914 County Championship for Middlesex with limited success against Yorkshire, Lancashire, and Nottinghamshire; he played alongside his younger brother, Stanley, in these matches.
