The Diocese of the Free State is a diocese in the Anglican Church of Southern Africa. History The first service North of the Orange River to be taken by an Anglican clergyman was conducted in 1850 by † Robert Gray, the first Bishop of Cape Town. In 1863, Edward Twells was consecrated the first Bishop of the Orange Free State and the Diocese was born. This new Diocese covered the area North of the Orange River, West of the Drakensberg and as far as the Zambezi River in the North. The bishop arrived in Bloemfontein on 1 October 1863, with three priests and two teachers. George Mitchell was the first priest ordained in the Diocese, in 1865. The Cathedral was completed and consecrated in 1866. The Brotherhood of St Augustine of Hippo was established in the diocese a year later with Canon Beckett and seven members. Rondebosch
Rondebosch is one of the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, South Africa. It is primarily a residential suburb, with shopping and business districts as well as the main campus of the University of Cape Town. History Four years after the first Dutch settlement at the Cape in 1652, the first experimental crops were grown along the banks of the Liesbeek River (at that stage called the Amstel or Versse Rivier). In October 1656, Jan van Riebeeck visited Rondeboschyn, whose name derived from a contraction of Ronde Doorn Bossien, meaning a circular grove of thorn trees. William Carter (bishop)
The Most Reverend William Marlborough Carter, (1850–1941) was an Anglican bishop and archbishop in South Africa. Family and education Dr Carter was born on 11 July 1850, the son of the Rev. William Adolphus Carter (1815-1901), and nephew of the Rev. Canon T. T. Carter. He was educated at Eton and Pembroke College, Oxford. He was married to Hester Marion Rose, C.B.E.(1867-1944) in London in 1904. He died on 14 Feb 1941 at Bear Ash, Twyford, Berkshire, and was buried at Eton College. His brother, Thomas Nevile Carter (1851–1879) played football for England in the second unofficial football match against Scotland, in November 1870. Clerical career Dr Carter was ordained in 1874. He held curacies at Christ Church, West Bromwich and All Saints, Bakewell. He was secretary to the Eton Mission in Hackney until his appointment to the episcopate as Bishop of Zululand in 1891. Anglican Archbishop Of Cape Town
The Diocese of Cape Town is a diocese of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa (ACSA) which presently covers central Cape Town, some of its suburbs and the island of Tristan da Cunha, though in the past it has covered a much larger territory. The Ordinary of the diocese is Archbishop of Cape Town and ''ex officio'' Primate and Metropolitan of the ACSA. His seat is St. George's Cathedral in Cape Town.
