Stanley Chang
Stanley Chang (born September 13, 1982) is a Democratic member of the Hawaii State Senate, representing the 9th district. Before entering the legislature, he served as a Honolulu city councilman. He defeated Sam Slom, the last remaining Republican in the Hawaii State Senate, in 2016. Chang faced Slom a second time in 2020, and won reelection. In 2022, he pushed for the construction of 100,000 housing units around the new Aloha Stadium. Chang argued that the parcel of land was prime for high-density affordable housing. Sam Slom
Samuel Morgan Slom (born April 13, 1942) is an American politician and a former member of the Hawaii Senate, where he represented the 9th District (which included Hawaii Kai, Aina Haina, Kahala and Diamond Head on the island of Oahu) from 1996 to 2016. Between 2010 and 2016, Slom was the sole Republican member of the Hawaii Senate. He is a native of Allentown, Pennsylvania. Career Slom formerly served as chief economist for the Bank of Hawaii. From 1983 until 2014, Slom served as the president and executive director of Smart Business Hawaii, a chamber of commerce that said it was more small business-oriented than the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii. The Chinese in Hawaiʻi constitute about 4.7% of the state's population, most of whom (75%) are Cantonese people with ancestors from Zhongshan in Guangdong. This number does not include people of mixed Chinese and Hawaiian descent. If all people with Chinese ancestry in Hawaiʻi (including the Chinese-Hawaiians) are included, they form about 1/3 of Hawaii's entire population.
