Stanfield's Limited () is a Canadian garment manufacturer based in Truro, Nova Scotia, with approximately 550 employees, whose company's products are sold throughout Canada and around the world. History Founding in Prince Edward Island The company traces its history to 1856 when Charles E. Stanfield and his brother-in-law Samuel E. Dawson founded Tryon Woollen Mills in Tryon, Prince Edward Island. Charles sold his interest to Samuel a decade later and moved to Truro. In 1870, Charles Stanfield established the Truro Woollen Mills on Brunswick Street, Truro, opposite the Intercolonial Railway station. He also built the St Croix Woollen Mills in St Croix, Nova Scotia and the Union Woollen Mills in Farnham, Quebec. Robert Stanfield
Robert Lorne Stanfield (April 11, 1914 – December 16, 2003) was a Canadian politician who served as the 17th premier of Nova Scotia from 1956 to 1967 and the leader of the Official Opposition and leader of the federal Progressive Conservative Party of Canada from 1967 to 1976. Born into an affluent Nova Scotia clothing manufacturing and political family in Truro, Stanfield graduated from Dalhousie University and Harvard Law School in the 1930s. He was a lawyer before becoming the leader of the Nova Scotia Progressive Conservative Party in 1948, with the goal of reviving the party that did not have a single seat in the legislature. After a rebuilding period, Stanfield led the party to a majority government in 1956; their first victory since 1928. Tryon, Prince Edward Island
Tryon is an unincorporated area in Prince County, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Situated on Route 1 and Route 10, it lies within the township of Lot 28 which in 2006 had a population of 880 people. Tryon is not far from Crapaud, Prince Edward Island. The area is mostly rural. In 1856, Charles E. Stanfield and his brother-in-law Samuel Dawson founded Tryon Woollen Mills in Tryon. Charles sold his interest to Samuel a decade later and moved to Truro, Nova Scotia where he founded the well-known Stanfields Underwear, which still operates. Salmon River (Nova Scotia)
The Salmon River is a Canadian river in central Nova Scotia's Colchester County. Rising in the Cobequid Hills in the central-northeastern part of the county, the river descends through a broad glacial valley at the head of Cobequid Bay, the eastern extremity of the Bay of Fundy. The river discharges into the bay at a point between Lower Truro and Lower Onslow, the historic head of navigation. A tidal bore is observed daily on the lower part of the river to the head of the tide at Truro. The river is known for ice jams during the spring freshet. Poor planning has led to urban sprawl in Truro and the neighbouring areas of the county impacting the river's floodplain. During the 1869 Saxby Gale, the entire floodplain and significant areas of Truro were inundated by ocean waters. The community of Salmon River takes its name from the river. John Stanfield (May 18, 1868 – January 22, 1934) was an industrialist and Conservative politician in Nova Scotia, Canada, who represented Colchester in both the Canadian House of Commons (1907–17) where he served as Chief Government Whip (1911–17) and the Canadian Senate (1921–34). He was the brother of the politician Frank Stanfield. Early life He was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, the son of Charles E. Stanfield and Lydia Dawson. Frank Stanfield (April 24, 1872 – September 25, 1931) was an entrepreneur in Nova Scotia, Canada, who was the 15th Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia (1930–31) and represented Colchester County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly (1911–20 and 1925–30). He was the father of the politicians Robert Lorne Stanfield and Frank Thomas Stanfield. Early life He was born in Truro, Nova Scotia, the son of Charles E. Stanfield, who established the Stanfield Mills in Truro, and Lydia Dawson. In 1896, with his brother John Stanfield, he took over the operation of the business, which was incorporated as Stanfield's Limited in 1906. Truro (Mi'kmaq: ''Wagobagitik''; Scottish Gaelic: ''Truru'') is a town in central Nova Scotia, Canada. Truro is the shire town of Colchester County and is located on the south side of the Salmon River floodplain, close to the river's mouth at the eastern end of Cobequid Bay.
