Stana Cerović
Stana Cerović (1936–2016) was a Montenegrin sworn virgin in rural Montenegro. He was part of the practice that permitted Albanian and Montenegrin people who were assigned female at birth to take on the gender role of men. By the time of his death, he was known, incorrectly, as the last such virgin in the country. Biography Stana Cerović was born in 1936 in a village near Šavnik, Montenegro, as the daughter of Anda and Milivoje Cerović. She had three sisters and two brothers. Both brothers died in childhood, and Cerović promised her father that she would continue to look after the family and live as a man. She began dressing as a man, and only socialised with men. Cerović began to smoke when she was five, and worked in the fields on her father's farm at seven. Šavnik
Šavnik ( cnr, Шавник, ) is a town in Montenegro and administrative center of the Šavnik Municipality. It is located at the confluence of three rivers - Bukovica, Bijela and Šavnik, at an altitude of 840 meters. It is the lowest lying settlement in the municipality. History Unlike most settlements in the area, which date back several centuries, Šavnik is relatively new, founded only in 1861. It was populated by migrants from other parts of Montenegro and Herzegovina, mostly craftsmen, merchants, riflers and blacksmiths, which were needed by local farmers. Sex assignment (sometimes known as gender assignment) is the discernment of an infant's sex at or before birth. A relative, midwife, nurse or physician inspects the external genitalia when the baby is delivered and, in more than 99.95% of births, sex is assigned without ambiguity. Assignment may also be done prior to birth through prenatal sex discernment. The sex assignment at or before birth usually aligns with a child's anatomical sex and phenotype.
