Stan Taylor (trade Unionist)
Edgar Stanley Taylor (22 Sep 1909 – 31 May 1966) was a British trade unionist, who served on the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Labour Party. Taylor became a carpenter, and was active in the Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers (ASW). In 1945, he began working for the union full-time as a district official, and in 1953, he was elected to its executive council. From 1963, he served on the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party. The Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers (ASW) was a British trade union representing carpenters, joiners and allied trades. The ASW was formed in 1921 by the amalgamation of two smaller unions. It was itself merged into the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians in 1971. History The ASW was formed in 1921 through the merger of two rival unions: the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters, Cabinetmakers and Joiners and the General Union of Carpenters and Joiners. The ASW had 176,000 members by 1945, making it the seventh largest union in Britain. Its membership rose to 198,000 by 1956. The National Federation of Building Trades Operatives (NFBTO) was a trade union federation in the United Kingdom, consisting of unions with members in construction and related industries. History In 1914, a group of workers attempted to form the Building Workers' Trade Union, a single industrial union to cover the entire construction industry. The existing unions in the industry opposed this, and held a conference in London in February 1915, to discuss their response. They decided to set up the National Associated Building Trades Council (NABTC). This focused on considering what industrial policies would be desirable after World War I was concluded.
