Stan Mark
Stan Mark was an American trumpet player. Mark started his playing career in 1963 with the United States Navy Band in Washington D.C. and later played lead trumpet with the band's jazz ensemble, The Commodores, from 1967 to 1970. In 1973 Mark joined the trumpet section of Maynard Ferguson's rock-influenced big band and was promoted to lead trumpet within a few months. Mark was visible within the band by his distinctive afro hairstyle and black trumpet. Despite constant personnel changes, Mark remained a fixture with the band until he was fired in 1982, although he maintained a cordial relationship with Ferguson until Ferguson's death in 2006. Following his departure from the Ferguson band in 1982, Mark began leading a big band of his own in Orlando, recording the album ''Here's Stan Mark'' on the Progressive Records label. Maynard Ferguson
Walter Maynard Ferguson CM (May 4, 1928 – August 23, 2006) was a Canadian jazz trumpeter and bandleader. He came to prominence in Stan Kenton's orchestra before forming his own big band in 1957. He was noted for his bands, which often served as stepping stones for up-and-coming talent, his versatility on several instruments, and his ability to play in a high register. Biography Early life and education Ferguson was born in Verdun (now part of Montreal), Quebec, Canada. Encouraged by his mother and father (both musicians), he started playing piano and violin at the age of four. At nine years old, he heard a cornet for the first time in his local church and asked his parents to buy one for him. When he was thirteen, he soloed with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Orchestra. Another big theme song ("Battlestar Galactica"), a couple of originals, a blast from the past (" Stella by Starlight"), and a cover of " Birdland", which was well received. Background and production In preparing for this album, Maynard proved once again just how keenly aware he was of what was going on in the world of music ("Fantasy" and " Baker Street" had become hits mere months before entering the studio, and "Birdland" was still growing in popularity after its debut the year before), but he was having trouble converting these sensibilities into chart success. ''New Vintage'' is the tenth studio album by Canadian jazz trumpeter Maynard Ferguson released in 1977 on Columbia Records. The title is likely an allusion to new recordings of two 'vintage' titles included in the track list. "Maria" was first recorded on ''Maynard '62'' (it is presented here in a new arrangement), and "Airegin" was first recorded in 1964 for the album ''Color Him Wild'' (this new recording features the original Mike Abene arrangement). The front cover plays on this theme, presenting a trumpet in an ice bucket in place of a bottle of champagne, while on the back cover, the cork is seen popping out of the trumpet's bell. ''Primal Scream'' marks the beginning of the second phase of Ferguson's career with Columbia, where his live big band sound is set aside in favor of lavish studio productions.
