Stampex
Stampex is a twice yearly British stamp show held at the Business Design Centre (BDC) in Islington, London, every Spring and Autumn. The show is organised by the Philatelic Traders Society (PTS) through their company ''PTS Stamp and Coin Exhibitions Limited'' and has been running for many years. Elements of the show The show consists mainly of stands from stamp dealers who are members of the PTS but specialist philatelic societies often hold meetings in conjunction with the show. Other important parts of the show include a youth area run by the Stamp Active Network, formerly the National Youth Stamp Group, and a large stand from Britain's Royal Mail where recent British stamp issues are on sale. Souvenirs Admission is free of charge and visitors usually receive a modest philatelic souvenir of some kind. Philatelic Traders Society
The Philatelic Traders' Society Ltd. (PTS) is a trade association for stamp dealers and philatelic traders which was established in Britain in 1929 and continues to this day. Activities The Society acts as a trade association on behalf of philatelic dealers, providing a Code of Conduct, an Arbitration Scheme, a trade directory, a special insurance scheme and similar services. The Society has stated that it represents members who trade in philatelic material and who provide professional expertise only and that investment advice and encouraging philatelic investment is outside the scope of the Society. Through its company ''PTS Stamp and Coin Exhibitions Ltd'' it organises the long-running British stamp exhibition Stampex twice each year, in the autumn and in the spring. Stamp Show
A philatelic exhibition is an exhibition of stamps and postal history where stamp collectors (philatelists) compete for medals. The displays are shown in glass frames, and the exhibition is normally accompanied by stamp dealer bourses and post office stands where stamps and other philatelic items may be purchased. Many philatelic exhibitions are regular events, held annually or at some other frequency and they are important events in the philatelic calendar. Types of exhibition Exhibitions are normally of international, national, regional or local scope. They may also be for specific collecting interests, for instance the Eurothema' exhibition for thematic collecting. Theft Of The Jules Rimet Trophy
The Jules Rimet Trophy, awarded to the winner of the football World Cup, was stolen in 1966 prior to the 1966 FIFA World Cup in England. The trophy was later recovered by a dog named Pickles who was later commended and gained a cult following for his heroism. One man was convicted for being involved but other possible culprits are still unknown. The trophy was eventually won by the hosting team England. Trophy placed in an exhibition The Football Association had received the silver-gilt trophy in January 1966 before the scheduled World Cup tournament the next July. It was usually kept in their headquarters at Lancaster Gate apart from for a couple of publicity events. In February, Stanley Gibbons' stamp company received permission to place the Trophy in their Stampex exhibition in March on condition that it would be under guard at all times. Business Design Centre
The Business Design Centre is a Grade II listed building located between Upper Street and Liverpool Road in the district of Islington in London, England. It was opened in 1862, originally named the Agricultural Hall and from 1884 the Royal Agricultural Hall, for holding agricultural shows. It was the home of the Royal Smithfield Club's Smithfield Show from 1862 to 1938. It hosted the Royal Tournament from its inauguration in 1880 until the event became too large for the venue and moved to Olympia in the early years of the 20th century. It hosted the first Crufts dog show in 1891. During the Second World War, the hall was commandeered by the Government, and from 1943, following the destruction of Mount Pleasant sorting office in an air raid, the parcels depot was moved to the hall. Philatelic
Philately (; ) is the study of postage stamps and postal history. It also refers to the collection and appreciation of stamps and other philatelic products. Philately involves more than just stamp collecting or the study of postage; it is possible to be a philatelist without owning any stamps. For instance, the stamps being studied may be very rare or reside only in museums. Etymology The word "philately" is the English transliteration of the French "", coined by Georges Herpin in 1864. Jeffery Matthews is a British artist, specialising in postage stamp design. He conceived the Machin definitive series' colour palette in the mid-1980s. Biography During his interior design study, Matthews was taught heraldry and letter typography. The Methodist Central Hall (also known as Central Hall Westminster) is a multi-purpose venue in the City of Westminster, London, serving primarily as a Methodist church and a conference centre. The building, which is a tourist attraction, also houses an art gallery, a restaurant, and an office building (formerly as the headquarters of the Methodist Church of Great Britain until 2000).
