Stalybridge Open
The Stalybridge Open was a men's and women's clay court tennis tournament founded in 1968 as the Stalybridge International Tennis Tournament. In 1970 the tournament was branded as the En-Tout-Cas Trophy Stalybridge, (for sponsorship reasons) that year and was second leg of the En-Tout-Cas Circuit that year. The tournament was played at the Priory Tennis Club (f.1921), Stalybridge, Great Britain until 1971. Stalybridge
Stalybridge () is a town in Tameside, Greater Manchester, England, with a population of 23,731 at the 2011 Census. Historic counties of England, Historically divided between Cheshire and Lancashire, it is east of Manchester city centre and north-west of Glossop. When a water-powered cotton mill was constructed in 1776, Stalybridge became one of the first centres of textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution. The wealth created in the 19th century from the factory-based cotton industry transformed an area of scattered farms and homesteads into a self-confident town. Ezio Di Matteo
Ezio Di Matteo (born 2 November 1948) is a former professional tennis player from Italy. Biography Di Matteo featured in two Davis Cup matches for Italy, the first in 1968, against Monaco in Biella. He played the doubles rubber, which he and partner Eugenio Castigliano won in straight sets to secure the tie for Italy. His other appearance came against Bulgaria in 1971, on clay courts at Perugia. On this occasion he played a reverse singles and completed a whitewash for Italy by beating Bozhidar Pampoulov. In Grand Slam competition he competed several times at both the French Open and Wimbledon Championships. His best results on tour were at Senigallia in 1971, when he made the singles quarter-finals and was a finalist in the doubles, with Antonio Zugarelli. He won the Tennis Napoli Cup in 1975. Isabel Fernández De Soto
María-Isabel Fernández de Soto (born 18 September 1950) is a former professional tennis player from Colombia. Biography Fernández, who is originally from Cali, took a tennis scholarship to the University of South Florida at the age of 19. After a year of college, she joined the international tennis circuit and became the first Colombian woman to play professionally. She made several WTA quarterfinals but was most successful on tour as a doubles player. She represented Colombia in the 1972 Federation Cup and won five of her six singles matches. Her two Grand Slam semifinals were both in doubles: the mixed doubles at the 1973 French Open with Jairo Velasco and women's doubles at the 1973 Wimbledon Championships with Fiorella Bonicelli. Evonne Goolagong Cawley
Evonne Fay Goolagong Cawley (née Goolagong; born 31 July 1951) is an Australian former world No. 1 tennis player. Goolagong was one of the world's leading players in the 1970s and early 1980s. At the age of 19, she won the French Open singles and the Australian Open doubles championships (the latter with Margaret Court). She won the women's singles tournament at Wimbledon in 1971. In 1980, she became the first mother to win Wimbledon for 66 years. Goolagong went on to win 14 Grand Slam tournament titles: seven in singles (four at the Australian Open, two at Wimbledon and one at the French Open), six in women's doubles, and one in mixed doubles. Kerry Harris (born 19 September 1949) is an Australian former professional tennis player, active from 1967 to 1975, who reached the semi-final of the 1972 Australian Open, and reached four Grand Slam doubles finals, of which she won one, in the 1972 Australian Open. Career Kerry's early years were spent under the guidance of J Hildebrands (Snr), before being coached by Harry Hopman and trained by Stan Nicholes. Joyce Williams (née Barclay; born 22 July 1944) is a retired tennis player from Scotland who was active in the 1960s and 1970s. Career Her best singles performance at a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the quarterfinals at the 1971 US Open. She beat compatriot Winnie Shaw in the second round and eighth-seeded Julie Heldman in the third to reach the quarterfinal, which she lost in straight sets to second-seeded Rosie Casals. At Wimbledon she reached the fourth round in singles in 1965 and 1968 in which she was beaten in two sets by fourth-seeded Nancy Richey and eighth-seeded Lesley Bowrey respectively. Valerie Ziegenfuss
Valerie Bradshaw (née Ziegenfuss; June 29, 1949) is an American former female professional tennis player. She started as an amateur player at the beginning of the 1970s, then turned professional. She is most famous for being one of the Original 9 with eight of her fellow players, who rebelled against the United States Tennis Association in 1970. Their actions brought about the creation of the Virginia Slims Circuit, which was the basis for the WTA Tour. During her career, she reached the fourth round at the French Open (in 1972) and the US Open on two occasions ( 1969 and 1975). She reached one singles final at the Virginia Slims of Oklahoma in 1972. Annette Van Zyl (born 25 September 1943 in Pretoria), also known by her married name as Annette du Plooy, is a South African former tennis player. She was ranked in the top ten female players during the mid 1960s, and in 1966 she won the French Open Mixed Doubles title with Frew McMillan, defeating Ann Haydon-Jones and Clark Graebner in three sets. Jan Kukal
Jan Kukal (born 13 September 1942) is a former professional tennis player who competed for Czechoslovakia. Career Kukal won the Czechoslovakian National Championships in 1968, the same year that he played his first Davis Cup tie for his country. He went on to appear in a total of 16 Davis Cup ties and finished with a 13-11 career record, which included five singles wins. In 1969 he was a member of the Czechoslovak team that won Europe's King's Cup. He reached four Grand Prix/ WCT doubles finals during his career, for one win, at Des Moines in 1973. At Grand Slam level his best performance was a semi-final appearance in the doubles event at the 1972 French Open, with Jan Kodeš. Coaching Kukal began his coaching career while he was still playing.
