Patricia Stallings
Patricia "Patty" Stallings (born 1964 or 1965) is an American woman who was wrongfully convicted of murder after the death of her son Ryan on September 7, 1989. Because testing seemed to indicate an elevated level of ethylene glycol in Ryan's blood, authorities suspected antifreeze poisoning and they arrested Patricia Stallings the next day. She was convicted of murder in early 1991 and sentenced to life in prison. Stallings gave birth to another child while incarcerated awaiting trial; he was diagnosed with methylmalonic acidemia (MMA), a rare genetic disorder that can mimic antifreeze poisoning. Prosecutors initially did not believe that the sibling's diagnosis had anything to do with Ryan's case and Stallings’ own lawyer failed to produce available evidence as proof of the possibility. Mary Stallings Coleman
Mary Stallings Coleman (1914–2001) was a justice of the Michigan Supreme Court from 1973 until 1982. Coleman was born in Forney, Texas but grew up in Washington, DC. She did her undergraduate work at the University of Maryland and received her law degree from George Washington University. Coleman eventually settled in Marshall, Michigan. She ran for the Michigan Supreme Court in 1972 and won the election and took office in 1973. She ran for re-election 1978. She retired in 1982 two years before her second term was up and Governor William Milliken appointed Lieutenant Governor James Brickley to replace her just before he and Brickley left office. She grew up in the neighborhood of Laurel Heights, singing in the black gospel choir of the First African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. By her teens, Stallings began singing in San Francisco night clubs such as the Hungry i, The Purple Onion, and El Matador. She performed with Ben Webster, Cal Tjader, Earl Hines, Red Mitchell, Teddy Edwards, and the Montgomery brothers ( Wes, Monk, and Buddy).
