St Hugh In The Carthusian Refectory
''St Hugh in the Carthusian Refectory'' is a 1655 painting by Francisco de Zurbarán, now in the Museum of Fine Arts of Seville. In front of each Carthusian is a terracotta bowl with meat and pieces of bread. Two terracotta jugs, an overturned bowl and two abandoned knives for cutting the meat. It shows Bruno of Cologne and the six other founder members of the Carthusian order being served a meal by Hugh of Châteauneuf (then bishop of Grenoble) and his page. One day Hugh had sent them meat and - whilst discussing whether it was right to break their fast and accept the gift - they fell into an ecstatic dream. Forty-five days later Hugh sent a message that he was coming to see them but his messenger returned and reported that the Carthusians were still sitting in front of the meat despite it being Lent. Francisco De Zurbarán
Francisco de Zurbarán ( , ; baptized 7 November 1598 – 27 August 1664) was a Spanish Painting, painter. He is known primarily for his religious paintings depicting monks, nuns, and martyrs, and for his still-lifes. Zurbarán gained the nickname "Spanish Caravaggio", owing to the forceful use of chiaroscuro in which he excelled. He was the father of the painter Juan de Zurbarán. Biography Zurbarán was born in 1598 in Fuente de Cantos, Extremadura; he was baptized on 7 November of that year. His parents were Luis de Zurbarán, a haberdasher, and his wife, Isabel Márquez. In childhood he set about imitating objects with charcoal. In 1614 his father sent him to Seville to apprentice for three years with Pedro Díaz de Villanueva, an artist of whom very little is known. The Carthusians, also known as the Order of Carthusians ( la, Ordo Cartusiensis), are a Latin enclosed religious order of the Catholic Church. The order was founded by Bruno of Cologne in 1084 and includes both monks and nuns. Bruno of Cologne, O.Cart. (german: Bruno von Köln, it, Bruno di Colonia;c. 1030 – 6 October 1101), venerated as Saint Bruno, was the founder of the Carthusian Order. He personally founded the order's first two communities. He was a celebrated teacher at Reims, and a close advisor of his former pupil, Pope Urban II. His feast day is October 6. Life Bruno was born in Cologne about the year 1030. According to tradition, he belonged to the family of Hartenfaust, or Hardebüst, one of the principal families of the city. Hugh Of Châteauneuf
Hugh of Châteauneuf (, 1053 – 1 April 1132), also called Hugh of Grenoble, was the Bishop of Grenoble from 1080 to his death. He was a partisan of the Gregorian reform and opposed to the Archbishop of Vienne, later Pope Callixtus II. Biography Born at Châteauneuf-sur-Isère, County of Albon to Odilo of Valence, Hugh showed piety and theological facility from a young age. While still a layman, Hugh was made a canon of Valence. His piety was such that it was said of him that he only knew one woman by sight. At the Council of Avignon in 1080, he was elected bishop of Grenoble, though he was not yet ordained.
