St George Gerald Foley
General Sir St. George Gerald Foley (10 July 1814 – 24 January 1897) was a British Army officer who became Lieutenant Governor of Guernsey. Military career Born the son of Thomas Foley, 3rd Baron Foley, Foley was commissioned into the 53rd Regiment of Foot in 1832. He was sent to Malta in 1834. After services as Aide-de-camp to the Commander-in-Chief, Ireland he became Assistant Commissioner at the Headquarters of the French Army in the East and was subsequently awarded the Order of the Medjidie for his service during the Crimean War in 1855. South Staffordshire Regiment
The South Staffordshire Regiment was a line infantry regiment of the British Army in existence for only 68 years. The regiment was created in 1881 under the Childers Reforms by the amalgamation of the 38th (1st Staffordshire) Regiment of Foot and the 80th (Staffordshire Volunteers) Regiment of Foot. The regiment saw service in the Second Boer War, World War I and World War II. Reduced to a single Regular Army battalion after the Second World War, the regiment was amalgamated, in 1959, with the North Staffordshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's) to form the Staffordshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's) which was later, in 2007, amalgamated with the Cheshire Regiment and the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment to form the Mercian Regiment. The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as "Knights of the Bath". George I "erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Military Order". He did not (as is commonly believed) revive the Order of the Bath, since it had never previously existed as an Order, in the sense of a body of knights who were governed by a set of statutes and whose numbers were replenished when vacancies occurred. Alexander Nelson (British Army Officer)
Lieutenant-General Sir Alexander Abercromby Nelson (30 June 1814 – 28 September 1893) was a British Army officer who became Lieutenant Governor of Guernsey. Military career Educated at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Nelson was commissioned into the 40th Regiment of Foot as an ensign in 1835. He served in Kandahar and in Afghanistan in 1841 and 1842 and took part in the Battle of Hyderabad in 1843 during the Conquest of Sindh. He was appointed Deputy Assistant Adjutant-General at Portsmouth in 1854 and subsequently became brigade major there before being made Deputy Adjutant-General in Jamaica in 1864. He was responsible for putting down the Morant Bay rebellion there, ordering the trial of George Gordon who was subsequently hanged in 1865. He went on to be Assistant Adjutant-General for Cork district in 1867 and Adjutant-General in Gibraltar in 1873. Edward Charles Frome
General Edward Charles Frome (7 January 1802 – 2 November 1890) was a prominent British Army officer and Surveyor General of South Australia. Early life Born in Gibraltar on 7 January 1802, Frome was orphaned early in his life. He was educated in Blackheath, London, England, where he became a close friend of Benjamin Disraeli. Career He received his commission in the Royal Engineers in 1825. He was involved in the Rideau Canal construction in Canada in 1827 to 1833. In September 1839 Frome arrived in South Australia on the ship ''Recovery'' to take up an appointment as the colony's third Surveyor General. He was also a member of the South Australian Legislative Council (2 October 1839 to 14 June 1843). He made an important contribution in surveying large areas of South Australia for new immigrants to settle upon. Henry Sturt
Henry Charles Sturt (; 9 August 1795 – 14 April 1866), of Crichel House, Dorset, was a British landowner and politician. Background Sturt was the son of Charles Sturt (1763–1812), who was the son of Humphrey Sturt and his wife Mary Pitfield, daughter of Charles Pitfield and Dorothy Ashley. Political career Sturt was elected to Parliament for Bridport in 1817, a seat he held until 1820. In 1823 he was appointed Sheriff of Dorset and later represented Dorchester in 1830 and Dorset between 1835 and 1846. Family Sturt married Lady Charlotte Penelope, daughter of Robert Brudenell, 6th Earl of Cardigan.
