St Denys Railway Station
St Denys railway station serves the St Denys and Portswood suburbs of Southampton in Hampshire, England. It is down the line from . Built in 1865, the station is named after the surrounding area, which in turn is named after the Priory of St Denys, a major landmark in medieval Southampton. The station is at the site of the junction between the London to Weymouth mainline and the West Coastway Line running between Southampton and Portsmouth. It is currently served mainly by South Western Railway, with additional services operated by Southern. There are four platforms; two on the main line and two on the branch line. History The original station was opened by the London and South Western Railway on 1 May 1861 and named ''Portswood'' after the small village to the west of the main line. St Denys is a partially riverside district of Southampton, England, centred north north-east of the city centre facing variously Bitterne Park and quay across the River Itchen estuary. The river is here spanned in the mid-east extreme of the district by Cobden Bridge, one of five within the city's broad boundaries, six including the railway bridge 100 m south. It is separated from the city centre by the districts sometimes known as Bevois Valley and New Town, in turn. SR Lord Nelson Class
The SR class LN or ''Lord Nelson'' class is a type of 4-cylinder 4-6-0 steam locomotive designed for the Southern Railway by Richard Maunsell in 1926. They were intended for Continental boat trains between London (Victoria) and Dover harbour, but were also later used for express passenger work to the South-West of England. The London and South Western Railway (LSWR, sometimes written L&SWR) was a railway company in England from 1838 to 1922. Northam railway station served the suburb of Northam in Southampton, England. History The London and Southampton Railway (L&SR) was opened in stages. Most of the portion south of was opened on 10 June 1839, to a temporary terminus in Southampton called Northam Road. Not long before the opening, on 4 June 1839, the L&SR was renamed the London and South Western Railway (LSWR). The temporary station was closed when the line was completed and the permanent was opened on 11 May 1840. The need to open a temporary station at Northam Road arose because of a dispute during construction of the line.
