St Catherine’s College Of Education For Home Economics
St. Catherine’s College of Education for Home Economics, was set up by the Dominican Order in 1929 for the training of secondary school teachers of Domestic Science. The college was known more colloquially as either ‘St Catherine’s’ or simply ‘Sion Hill’. It was renamed in 1971 St. Catherine’s College of Education for Home Economics. The Dominican Order also established The Froebel College of Education for primary school teachers at Sion Hill. From the 1974 the college offered a three-year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) in Home Economics which was validated by Trinity College Dublin, this was recognised by the Teaching Council of Ireland for secondary school teaching of Home Economics, since students would also have studied Irish or Religion they would also be qualified to teach those subjects. Blackrock () is a suburb of Dublin, Ireland, northwest of Dún Laoghaire. Location and access Blackrock covers a large but not precisely defined area, rising from sea level on the coast to at White's Cross on the N11 national primary road. Froebel College of Education was one of five colleges in Ireland which was recognised by the Department of Education for the training and education of national school teachers. It was located at Sion Hill, Cross Avenue, Blackrock, Dublin and was run by the Dominican Order. Margaret Mac Curtain (1929–2020) was a Dominican sister, Irish historian, writer, and educator. Career Mac Curtain was a native of County Cork, Ireland. She was the daughter of Sean and Ann Mac Curtáin. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1950 from University College Cork (UCC), where she won the Peel Prize and turned down an opportunity to study with J. R. R. Tolkien prior to joining the Dominican Order. She joined the teaching staff at Sion Hill, Blackrock and she held several positions including Prioress of Sion Hill Convent (1984–1989). In 1964, she earned a Ph.D. in history and was a lecturer in the Irish History Department of University College Dublin from 1964 to 1994.
