St. Petersburg Yacht Club
The St. Petersburg Yacht Club (SPYC) is a private yacht club located in St. Petersburg, Florida (United States) and a member of the Gulf Yachting Association and the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs. The club won the Adams Cup in 1979. History The St. Petersburg Yacht Club was founded in 1909 and the clubhouse was inaugurated on its current site in 1917. One-Design Racing began two years later, when six Fish Class sailboats were acquired. Offshore racing started with the Havana Race in 1930 as the forerunner for the Southern Ocean Racing Conference (SORC). Yacht Club
A yacht club is a sports club specifically related to yachting. Description Yacht clubs are mostly located by the sea, although there some that have been established at a lake or riverside locations. Yacht or sailing clubs have either a marina or a delimited section of the beach or shoreline with buoys marking the areas off-limits for swimmers as well as safe offshore anchorages. On shore they also include a perimeter reserved for the exclusive use of the members of the club as well as a clubhouse with attached Bar (counter), bar, café or restaurant where members socialize in a pleasant and informal setting. The Gulf Yachting Association (GYA) formed in 1901, is a non-profit organization consisting of 39 member and affiliate yacht club's from Houston, TX to Sarasota, FL along the Gulf of Mexico in the United States. Fish-class Sloop
The Fish class sloop, also known informally as the Fish Boat, is a one-design sailboat designed in 1919 by New Orleans resident Rathbone DeBuys, member of the Southern Yacht Club. It is reputed to have been the most popular sailboat racing class on the US Gulf Coast in the early 20th century and was the Gulf Yachting Association one-design racer until it was replaced by the Flying Scot in 1969. It should not be confused with Nat Herreshoff's larger sloops, the Annisquam Fish Class Marconi rigged catboats, nor various motor yachts and surfboards of similar names.
