St. Peter Port South
St. Peter Port South was an electoral district in Guernsey in the Channel Islands. It was created following the Machinery of Government changes which came into effect in 2004. It consists of the southern part of the parish of St. Peter Port. It is divided from St. Peter Port North by the following roads: Rohais, Les Gravées, The Grange and St. Julian's Avenue. The States of Guernsey (french: États de Guernesey), sometimes referred to as the Government of Guernsey, is the parliament and government of the British Crown dependency of Guernsey. Some laws and ordinances approved by the States of Guernsey also apply to Alderney and Sark (the other component parts of the Bailiwick of Guernsey) as "Bailiwick-wide legislation" with the consent of the governments of those islands. All enactments of the States of Guernsey apply to Herm as well as Guernsey, since Herm is directly administered by the Bailiwick of Guernsey. The deadline for nominations was 26 August. There were eight candidates, Roy Bisson, Michael Bourgaize, Barry Cash, Gloria Dudley-Owen, Jan Kuttlewascher, Peter Leigh, Angus Perfitt, and Jenny Tasker. Perfitt withdrew in early September before the election, however, his name remained on the ballot. Tasker won with 306 votes. Guernsey elects a legislature at the national level. The islands of Alderney and Sark also elect their own parliaments. Guernsey The Guernsey legislature, the States of Deliberation, consists of 38 elected members (known as Deputies) and two representatives of Alderney, with the Bailiff (or his Deputy) acting as Presiding Officer with neither a casting nor original vote. Laurie Morgan
Laurie Morgan (17 December 1930 – 18 January 2018) was a Deputy of the States of Guernsey. He was Guernsey's first Chief Minister and was elected to the post in May 2004. His term of office was due to expire in 2008, when the next General Election was due. It was announced on 31 January 2007 that the Chief Minister and the Policy Council were to resign. Morgan was born in London in 1930. He was first elected as a Deputy on 29 June 1988, and then went on to serve as a Conseiller until the post was abolished in 2000. The ''Guernsey Press and Star'', more commonly known as the ''Guernsey Press'' is the only daily newspaper published in Guernsey. History The ''Guernsey Evening Press'' was first published in 1897. In 1951 it purchased the struggling ''Guernsey Star'' (first published in 1813), renaming itself ''Guernsey Evening Press and Star''. The paper was published by The Guernsey Press Company until 1999 when the company merged with Guiton, publishers of the ''Jersey Evening Post''. In 2004 Guiton came under the ownership of the Claverlely Group, which also owns the ''Wolverhampton Express and Star'' and the ''Shropshire Star''. 2008 Guernsey General Election
The 2008 Guernsey general election was held on 23 April 2008 to elect 45 members of the States of Guernsey. 18,576 voters or 40.58% of the eligible population of 45,772 turned out and cast a total of 89,239 votes; there were 10 blank papers, 35 spoilt papers and on average 4.8 votes were cast. Of the 28 standing deputies all but two ( Brian de Jersey and Wendy Morgan), were re-elected to the house; this means that 19 of the Deputies-Elect are new to the chamber. Five of the 12 candidates who had stood unsuccessfully in 2004 were elected in 2008. The candidate who polled the most votes was first time candidate Matt Fallaize standing in the Vale, who received 2,322 and became the youngest member of the house at 26. The Bailiwick of Guernsey includes the island of Guernsey and other islands such as Alderney, Sark, Herm, Jethou, Brecqhou, and Lihou. Each parish was established, probably in the 11th century, as a religious area, each having its parish church. Peter Harwood
Peter Andrew Harwood is a Guernsey lawyer and politician who was the Chief Minister of Guernsey from 1 May 2012 until 25 February 2014. Harwood was born in Guernsey in 1947, and educated at Elizabeth College, Guernsey and University of Southampton. He was admitted as an English Solicitor in 1972 and continued in employment in London as a Solicitor and latterly as a Corporate Finance Executive before returning to Guernsey. Called to the Guernsey Bar as an Advocate in 1982, Deputy Harwood served as a partner of law firm Ozannes until the end of 2009 and as a consultant until retirement in December 2011. Harwood was appointed a Commissioner of the Guernsey Financial Services Commission in 2004 and served as Chairman from 2006 until retirement in January 2012.
