St. Peter Of Verona Altarpiece
The ''St. Peter of Verona Triptych'' (Italian: ''Trittico di San Pietro Martire'') is a painting by the Italian early Renaissance master Fra Angelico, executed around 1428–1429. It is housed in the National Museo Nazionale di San Marco, Museum of San Marco, Florence, region of Tuscany, Italy. History The work is Fra Angelico's first documented work. It comes from the convent of San Pietro Martire and a document from 30 March 1429 notes a sum of 20 florin (Italian coin), florins owed to the convent of San Domenico, Fiesole, where the painter was a monk. According to some art historians, it could be contemporary of the ''Virgin and Child with Saint Anne (Masaccio), Virgin and Child with Saint Anne'' (1424–1425) by Masaccio and Masolino da Panicale, although it lacks the use of compartments which at the time were widespread. Description In the center of the work is a ''Maestà'' (Madonna Enthroned with Child) and, at the sides, are the Saints Dominic, John the Baptist, Peter of ... Fra Angelico
Fra Angelico (born Guido di Pietro; February 18, 1455) was an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance, described by Vasari in his '' Lives of the Artists'' as having "a rare and perfect talent".Giorgio Vasari, ''Lives of the Artists''. Penguin Classics, 1965. He earned his reputation primarily for the series of frescoes he made for his own friary, San Marco, in Florence. He was known to contemporaries as Fra Giovanni da Fiesole (Brother John of Fiesole) and Fra Giovanni Angelico (Angelic Brother John). In modern Italian he is called ''Beato Angelico'' (Blessed Angelic One); the common English name Fra Angelico means the "Angelic friar". In 1982, Pope John Paul II proclaimed him "blessed" in recognition of the holiness of his life, thereby making the title of "Blessed" official. Fiesole is sometimes misinterpreted as being part of his formal name, but it was merely the name of the town where he took his vows as a Dominican friar, and was used by contemporaries to distingu ... Gentile Da Fabriano
Gentile da Fabriano ( – 1427) was an Italian painter known for his participation in the International Gothic painter style. He worked in various places in central Italy, mostly in Tuscany. His best-known works are his ''Adoration of the Magi'' from the ''Strozzi Altarpiece'' (1423), and the ''Flight into Egypt''. Following a visit to Florence in the 1419, he came in contact with humanism, which influenced his work throughout the rest of his career. He became highly influential for other painters in Florence, especially because of his use of detail based on the observations he made of the natural world. Bibliography Early life in Fabriano (c. 1370-1400) Gentile (di Niccolò di Massio) da Fabriano was born around 1370 in or near Fabriano, in the Marche. Despite having several family members who took part in different civic and religious organizations in the city, much of Gentile's early life remains undocumented. His mother died some point before 1380, and his father, Niccol ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
