St. Michael Island, Alaska
St. Michael Island is an island on the southeast side of the Norton Sound in Alaska. The island is about long and wide. St. Michael Island contains two settlements, St. Michael, on the island's east side, and Stebbins, on the northwest side. St. Michael Island was named by traders of the Russian-American Company in 1833, when they built a trading post at the site of the current village of St. Michael. Norton Sound
Norton Sound (russian: Нортон-Саунд) is an inlet of the Bering Sea on the western coast of the U.S. state of Alaska, south of the Seward Peninsula. It is about 240 km (150 mi) long and 200 km (125 mi) wide. The Yukon River delta forms a portion of the south shore and water from the Yukon influences this body of water. It is ice-free from June to October. Norton Sound was explored by Captain James Cook in September 1778. He named the body of water after Sir Fletcher Norton, then Speaker of the British House of Commons. The Norton Sound area has been home to Yup'ik and Inupiat for many centuries. It is the boundary between the two peoples; the Inupiat live to the north and the Yup'ik to the south. The town of Nome is along the northern edge of Norton Sound. Stebbins, Alaska
Stebbins ( esu, Tapraq, ik, Tapqaq; Atqa.wik) is a city in Nome Census Area, Alaska, United States. At the 2010 census the population was 556, up from 547 in 2000. Geography Stebbins is located at (63.511893, -162.274632), on the north side of St. Michael Island, which is on the south side of the Norton Sound in western Alaska. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which, of it is land and of it (4.71%) is water. Demographics Stebbins first appeared on the 1940 U.S. Census as an unincorporated village. It formally incorporated in 1969. As of the census of 2000, there were 547 people, 123 households, and 104 families residing in the city. The population density was 15.6 people per square mile (6.0/km2).
