St. Mary's Park (Limerick)
St. Mary's Park is a housing estate in Limerick, Ireland. The estate is located on the northern end of King's Island, Limerick, King's Island in an area known locally as the Island Field. The area is located to the north of the historic and ancient city of Limerick which is located in Englishtown located on the southern half of King's Island. The Island Field area was originally accessed from the walled Englishtown in medieval times via a gate in the wall called Island Gate. The estate was completed on 19 August 1935 and is one of the oldest corporation estates in Limerick. The first residents moved from slums in the Lady's Lane, Parnell Street & Palmerstown areas of the city. King's Island, Limerick
King's Island is an area of central Limerick, Ireland. The area is often referred to colloquially as ''The Island'' and consists of two distinct areas, ''Englishtown'' and ''St Mary's Park''. The historical city of Limerick known as ''Englishtown'' is located on the southern end and St Mary's Park; a local authority housing estate is located on the northern end. The island is formed from a distributary of the River Shannon. The Abbey River diverts from the Shannon before meeting it again at a confluence near the Potato Market. The island probably took its name after the 13th-century English King John's Castle was built. However, a 150AD map by Ptolemy shows a place called 'Regia' at the same site as King's Island, and history suggests the presence of earlier settlements in the area. Moyross
Moyross () is a suburb and council estate in Limerick city in Ireland. Moyross is located on the city's north side and is the largest housing estate in Limerick. The Roman Catholic parish of Moyross is one of 60 parishes in the Diocese of Limerick. As of the 2011 census, there were 2,183 people living in Moyross parish. Development Housing development in the area started in the 1970s and 1980s. Up to 2008, the estate was unusual in that it spanned two electoral areas, with 728 houses part of the Ballynanty DED of Limerick City Council, and 432 houses in the Limerick North Rural DED of Limerick County Council. Southill, Limerick
Southill () is an area in the south of Limerick, Ireland consisting of four housing estates: O'Malley Park, Keyes Park, Kincora Park and Carew Park. Unemployment rates in the area as of 2003 were at four times the national average, with only 50% of adults in Southill having completed formal education. A report from 1982 showed two-thirds of Southill's population were under the age of 18, with 94 percent having left school at the age of 16. Several reports done since the initial report in 1982 have shown similar trends. In the media, Southill is known for its crime rate, which is contributed to by gangland feuds, turf wars, and poverty in the area. However, efforts are currently being made to rejuvenate the area.
